Video-assisted thoracoscopic transplantation of myoblasts into the heart  Richard B. Thompson, MD, Cyrus J. Parsa, MD, Ewout J. van den Bos, MD, Bryce H. Davis, BES, Eric M. Toloza, MD, PhD, Igor Klem, MD, Donald D. Glower, MD, Doris A. Taylor, PhD  The Annals of Thoracic Surgery  Volume 78, Issue 1, Pages 303-307 (July 2004) DOI: 10.1016/S0003-4975(03)01215-3

Fig 1 (A) A schematic depiction of the components necessary for successful video-assisted thoracoscopic cell transplantation, including instrument selection and defined cell delivery sites. The four areas of the heart highlighted in red represent major potential infarct zones that were targeted for cell delivery. (B) Precise delivery of cells to the myocardium is accomplished through a combined use of an angled needle and stabilization of the heart with an endo-Babcock. This allows layering of the cells in a site parallel to the epicardial surface. The Annals of Thoracic Surgery 2004 78, 303-307DOI: (10.1016/S0003-4975(03)01215-3)

Fig 2 A representative explanted heart 4 hours after injection of 2.5 × 106 myoblasts (A) in each of four sites (posterior not visible), showing (B) transmural injection of pthalo blue dye. Arrows indicate injected areas. The Annals of Thoracic Surgery 2004 78, 303-307DOI: (10.1016/S0003-4975(03)01215-3)

Fig 3 (A) The DAPI (4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole)-labeled myoblasts were directly injected into myocardium. (B) Iron-oxide–labeled skeletal myoblasts appear blue after Prussian blue staining. (C) A negative control of a noninjected area is shown. (D) A hematoxylin & eosin stain is shown of the same area as in panel B. Arrows indicate injected cells. (Original magnification ×200; bar indicates 100 microns.) The Annals of Thoracic Surgery 2004 78, 303-307DOI: (10.1016/S0003-4975(03)01215-3)

Fig 4 Magnetic resonance cine images showing the long axis (A) and short axis (B) of the same animal. Injected myoblasts are visible as a black dot in the posterior wall (white arrows). (LV = left ventricle; RV = right ventricle; LA = left atrium; bar indicates 2 cm.) The Annals of Thoracic Surgery 2004 78, 303-307DOI: (10.1016/S0003-4975(03)01215-3)
