How did the Civil War begin? Election of 1860 – Lincoln wins  South Carolina secedes right after Lincoln wins (December 1860): Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas follow (page 497).  Confederate army tries to take the federal military outpost of Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Lincoln sends supplies to help the federal troops defend the fort. The Civil War officially begins.  Lincoln calls on states to provide troops  North Carolina, Tennnessee, Virginia, Arkansas secede  Northern states rally and provide troops  Northern Virginia break off from Virginia because they do not want to secede. They make their own state government and become West Virginia.  Border States: Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland and Missouri do not secede even though they have slavery. Kentucky and Missouri controlled important rivers. Washington DC was in Maryland. How did the strategies of the Union differ from those of the Confederacy?
