A PORTRAIT OF THE CHURCH Ephesians 2:19-22
Ephesians 2:19-22 ”Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.” [NKJV]
1. A kingdom - citizens Ephesians 2:19 – “No longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens” Matthew 16:15-19 – the church as the kingdom Col. 1:12-14 – God transferred us into the kingdom of His Son Dan. 2:44-45 – The kingdom which shall stand forever 2 Pt. 1:10-11 – We need to make our calling and election sure
2. A Family - Household Ephesians 2:19 – “members of the household of God” Ephesians 1:3-6 – adopted as sons John 1:11-13 – given the right to become children, born of God Romans 8:14-17 – given the spirit of adoption, calling out “Abba, Father” John 3:3,5-8; 1 Pt. 1:23 – we are adopted, but also born into the family
3. A building - foundation Ephesians 2:20 – built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets Matt. 16:16-18 – built on the foundation that Jesus is the Son of God 1 Cor. 3:10-11 – Jesus is the only foundation
4. A building - cornerstone Ephesians 2:20 – Jesus Christ the chief cornerstone 1 Peter 2:4-7 – rejected by men, but chosen of God Isaiah 28:16 – precious cornerstone, sure foundation Psalm 118:22-24 – the stone which the builders rejected
5. A temple – the dwelling place of god in the spirit Ephesians 2:21-22 – the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 – we are the holy temple of God 1 Peter 2:5 – a spiritual house, an holy priesthood
