Thursday 9/14/17 Notebook Entry: What do you think makes a boat stay afloat? When you step on water you fall right in. Why does a boat not do this?

The Problem: Review of the Story Friends are locked inside a historic fort only accessed by a drawbridge which has been raised. You will build a boat to float keys to the drawbridge. 5 x 5 piece of tinfoil 6 keys are needed to unlock it from the inside 3 hex nuts (1 hex nut = 2 keys) You will have 10 minutes to build the boat. Boat must float for 20 seconds.

Group Names

Criteria (plural) Criteria are the things that must happen to accomplish the task. What are the criteria of this current problem?

Constraint Constraints are the factors that limit how you can solve the problem. What are some constraints in this problem?

Build a Boat – 10 minutes!!! Discuss design ideas and decide on one design for this first test. Record the design on your Boat Records Sheet Float your boat! Be sure to start the timer as soon as you put the keys in the boat. Record the length of time your boat floated and the number of keys it held on your Boat Records Sheet Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of your design and record on your Boat Records Sheet.

Present your first design to the class. Answer these questions in your presentation How did you construct your boat? Why did you choose that design? How did the constraints affect your design? What things did you think about and try before choosing this design? Class: Does the presented boat meet the criteria?
