ATTWN Ch. 9-12

What is Blore’s suspicion regarding the cause of Mrs. Roger’s death? Armstrong gave her too much of a sedative.

The guests find out the real reason that Lombard is on Soldier Island; what is it? He was paid 100 guineas to act as a detective and observe the guests.

How does Lombard answer when Blore demands to know why he brought his revolver to the island? Lombard says he always carries it because he’s used to being in “tight places”.

What was the cause of death of General Macarthur? He was bludgeoned; he received a sharp blow to the back of the head.

Wargrave conducts an informal inquiry after Macarthur is discovered dead. He responds to each guests’ alibi in the same way. What is his response? He points out the flaw in their alibis by providing an explanation that gives each one an opportunity to have committed the crime.

Name one of the euphemisms that are used instead of “dead” in the book. They “have gone beyond suspicion.” Another one “acquitted”.

What does Wargrave deduce about the identity of U. N. Owen? U. N. is one of them.

Why does Vera suspect Armstrong as the killer? Because as a doctor, he has knowledge of, and access to--sedatives that can kill.

As Emily Brent begins to crack under pressure, she zones out while writing in her diary. What strange phrase does she write? The murderer’s name is Beatrice Taylor.

Which two guests are trusted with the keys to the chest and the cupboard? Lombard and Blore, respectively

How was Blore responsible for Landor’s death? He perjured himself (lied in court) in order to convict an innocent man--Landor, who later died in prison.

How is Emily murdered? She is injected in the neck with poison.

When Brent dreams of Beatrice Taylor, what is Beatrice doing in the dream? Pressing her face against the window and moaning to be let in.

What is suggested by this simile: “Six people, all outwardly self-possessed and normal. And within? Thoughts that ran round in a circle like squirrels in a cage…”? The guests are putting up a veneer (front) of holding it together but in reality they are beginning to lose it.

What characteristic or personality trait is reflected in Lombard’s statement: “If I were to commit one or more murders, it would be solely for what I could get out of them. This mass clearance isn’t my line of country.” selfishness

While all the other guests are freaking out, what is the Judge’s demeanor (behavior) like? Unruffled, composed, calm

Discuss: What do the following Quotes suggest? Blore grew redder still…Armstrong said angrily…, there’s things I want to know about you… Then his lips drew back from his teeth in that curious wolf-like smile Vera cried out…in a high, shrill voice It’s mad!-absolutely mad-we’re all mad! Lombard’s teeth showed in what was almost a snarl. There’s cold ham and tongue…and some tinned fruits.
