Roles of the NCO A brief guide to squadron roles OBJECTIVE Recognize the CAPR 20-1e is awesome. ATTENTION STEP Ask if anyone knows what the 2 types of staff positions are. (Ask for one at a time)

Position categories Line staff Support staff Focuses on developing leadership qualities in themselves. Focus on developing followership qualities in their subordinates. At higher grades, they’ll develop leadership in their subordinates. Support staff Keep the unit running smoothly. Are a great way to teach responsibility. Are a great way to make newer member feel apart of the unit.

Element leaders Usually C/A1C through C/TSgt The glue between the newest members and the flight staff. They help maintains 3 big goals. Satisfactory performance during formations and ceremonies. Military bearing. Morale. While occasionally harsh, element leaders should be twice as encouraging. From CAPR 20-1 Responsible for the supervision and training of the cadet element, to include: Satisfactory performance during formations and ceremonies. Military bearing. Morale. The cadet squad leaders should be familiar with CAP directives as listed in CAPP 52-15.

Is this a flight sergeant? Well, not quite.

Flight Sergeants Usually C/SSgt through C/CMSgt Flight sergeants are the face of the flight. Train the flight in drill and ceremonies. Handle formation and organization of cadets. Maintain order and discipline. Act as flight commander if needed. Flight commanders are the face of the flight. If you only have one flight, you may even end up being the face of the squadron. D&C Flight sergeants need to know AF Drill and Ceremonies Manuel (AFM 36-2203) From CAPR 20-1 Assists the cadet flight commander in the performance of his/her duties, to include: Inspections. Instructions in military courtesy and drill Maintenance of discipline. Flight administration and personnel matters. Flight commander (acting). Related duties as required. The cadet flight sergeant should be familiar with CAP directives as listed in CAPP 52-15.

Recruitment/retention NCO Plan activities to recruit new members. Keep an eye out for local events that bring exposure to the squadron. No-show calls Squadrons that don’t follow up with delinquent member will not learn what they could've done different. Could also be call recruitment and retention officer. As far as I know this isn’t an official position at CAPR 20-1 but that doesn’t mean that the role doesn’t exits. Activities Officer (pretty close): Plans and conducts interesting and challenging activities for CAP cadets, to include but not limited to: Field trips. Participating in emergency services exercises. Sports competitions. Social functions. Community betterment projects. Aerospace education activities (in coordination with aerospace education officer). The squadron activities officer should be familiar with CAPR 52-16, CAPP 216 and CAP directives in the, 52, 76, 160, and 900 series. Parades National Night Out Community center events Harvest festivals Simple stuff: Bring-a-friend day. Bring-parent day. Business sponsors. Like everything else is the universe, a high-energy system is constantly losing energy. Low energy is bad for an unit that wants to be effective. Play s proactive role in maintaining the member ship within the squadron, as well as leading brain storming for new way to gain members. Let’s brainstorm what a couple way to keep members in the squadron. * Periodic calls to absent cadets * Let them know that they are valued member of CAP. * Hold open houses, for parents and fields of member can visit and meet the cadet and senior staff. This builds trust with one of CAP’s most valueable assets: parents.

Aerospace education NCO Works with the senior Aerospace officer Could conduct a weekly aerospace current events update. Assist in gathering materials from around the squadron for upcoming aerospace activities. Petition for a squadron rocketry program From CAPR 20-1 Assists the senior member aerospace education officer in directing the cadet aerospace education program, to include: Aerospace education instruction. Review of subject matter with cadets. Aerospace education laboratories. Related duties as required. The aerospace education officer should be familiar with CAP directives as listed in CAPP 52-15 , CAPR 52-16 and directives listed in this regulation for the senior member aerospace education officer.

Emergency Services NCO Works with the senior E.S. officer Help pick the safety briefing topic. Find out what qualifications training is needed for at the next ES activity.

Communications NCO Works with the senior communications officer Help keep logs during NET. Maintain inventory of radios. Learn how to operate radios during ground team operations. Great way to get your MRO qualification. Assists the senior member communications officer (composite squadron) in the performance of his/her duties, to include: Operation of squadron net control stations. Administration. Communications training. Communications supply. Related duties as required. The cadet communications officer should be familiar CAP Directives as listed in CAPP 52-15, CAPR 52-16 and directives listed in this regulation for the senior member communication officer.

Supply NCO Help bring order to the chaos. Many squadrons are in a bad place when it comes to organization. While humble, supply management is crucial to an effective unit. Get an Inventory management system. ABS Inventory inFlow

In closing… There is a position for all ranks of NCOs in all parts of the squadron. It is important to routinely cross the border between line and support to have better respect for your peers.
