Mathematics is Everywhere SPRING LECTURE FOR SCHOOLS Mathematics is Everywhere What is mathematics and why does it work? In this talk we will look at some of the ways in which mathematics can tell you things about the world that you can't learn in any other way. We will see how computers have extended the reach of human mathematicians, discover the simple nature of many hard problems that no computer can solve, learn how to win at dice, understand how to coach some Olympic sports champions, and even discover whether the English Premiership League is just a random process. We will meet the modern concepts of chaos and fractals, and see how we can use them to shed light on Abstract Expressionist art and detect art fraud. This lecture has been written with transition and fifth year students in mind. Student tickets are 2€. To book please contact: Dr. Ciaran Byrne Development Executive Science & Industry RDS Ballsbridge Dublin 4 Ph: 01-2407217 E-mail: ciaran.byrne@rds.ie SPRING LECTURE FOR SCHOOLS John Barrow Cosmologist and author John Barrow, well-known cosmologist and author, is distinguished both as a scientist and as a skilled interpreter of scientific progress.
