Cutaneous sarcoidosis and primary biliary cirrhosis: A chance association or related diseases?  Sowmya Kishor, MD, Maria L. Turner, MD, Brian B. Borg, MD, MHS, David E. Kleiner, MD, Edward W. Cowen, MD, MHSc  Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology  Volume 58, Issue 2, Pages 326-335 (February 2008) DOI: 10.1016/j.jaad.2007.07.031 Copyright © 2008 American Academy of Dermatology, Inc. Fig 1 Case 1. A, Liver biopsy specimen showing features of both sarcoidosis and primary biliary cirrhosis. Multiple coalescent nonnecrotizing epithelioid granulomas are seen replacing portal area. Giant cells are easily identified and granulomas are well circumscribed. B. Separate core biopsy specimen from that shown in A demonstrates portal areas without ducts. There is mild infiltrate of lymphocytes, plasma cells, and eosinophils, and prominent cholate stasis changes in periportal hepatocytes. No bile duct is seen. (A and B, Hematoxylin-eosin stain; original magnifications: A, ×20; B, ×40.) Fig 2 Case 2. Florid duct lesion. Bile duct shows reactive epithelial proliferation and is surrounded by dense lymphocytic inflammation and poorly organized collection of epithelioid histiocytes. (Hematoxylin-eosin stain; original magnification: ×40.)
