Rubric 4 (A): Exceptional Caption 3 (B): Commendable Caption Caption is written in active voice with picture-painting verbs. Story-telling captions include the 5W’s and H in a creative construction. Captions identify all faces by first and last name except for candids with more than seven subjects. Captions use a variety of beginnings and avoid starting with a name. Captions do not state the obvious but provide information that is fresh and meaningful. There are no style, spelling, punctuation or grammar errors. 3 (B): Commendable Caption Caption is written in active voice with mediocre verb choice. Include most of the 5W’s and H. Captions use some varied beginnings and may start with a name. Captions state some obvious components of the photograph, but also include information that is interesting. Few to no style, spelling, punctuation or grammar errors. 2 (C): Adequate Caption Caption may or may not be written in active voice, but lacks creativity in verb choice. Includes few of the 5W’s and H; overall, it lacks information. Captions may not identify all of the faces in the picture or may identify them incorrectly. Captions lack a variety in beginnings and may start with a name. Captions state the obvious and lack fresh and meaningful information. There are several style, spelling, punctuation and grammar errors. 1 (D): Little to No Evidence of Achievement Caption Missing much of the above. Missing needed information. Lacks people identification. Many style, spelling, punctuation and grammar errors. Rubric

Snapping a picture in the school parking lot to send their grandparents, Maria Gonzales and Jennifer Williams celebrate their election as homecoming maids at the October 15th pep rally. Best friends since kindergarten, the senior girls were almost more excited for each other than themselves: “I was thrilled when Maria was announced one of the maids and I never even heard them announce my name,” Jennifer recalled, “Then Maria screamed and pointed at me.” 4 Friends since kindergarten, seniors, and homecoming maids is definitely a best friend goal. Maria Gonzales and Jennifer Williams celebrate their crowning in the school parking lot after the pep rally. The girls ran to take a picture to show their grandparents and to post on facebook. Jennifer explains with excitement, “I was thrilled when Maria was named one of the maids. Maria screamed and pointed at me when she heard my name called.” 3 Seniors Maria Gonzales and Jennifer Williams smile for their picture at the homecoming pep rally. The two girls were just named homecoming maids. “Jennifer and I have been best friends since freshman year, so being a homecoming maid with her is very exciting!” exclaimed Maria. 2 Example Captions

Flashlights from smartphones illuminate the scene of Mrs Flashlights from smartphones illuminate the scene of Mrs. Smith’s English IV class as they read Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven on Halloween. The annual event brings out Edgar the Raven and Mrs. Smith’s dramatic side, as she dresses in costume and turns off the lights to read poetry. “An eerie atmosphere surrounds the students, dressed in their favorite Halloween costumes. I love it,” Becca Guevera, one of Mrs. Smith’s seniors added. Complex calculations sprawl across the white board during an after school study session as John David reviews physics equations. The extra explanations from Mr. Smith, the physics teacher, helped John get an A on the next test. “It really helped me understand the material we were covering. Class is just really busy sometimes and physics is hard!” John exclaimed. Additional Exemplars
