Introduction to Engineering 2014-15

The great strength of Engineering is its DIVERSITY  It is not unusual to technicians & technologists working in research labs or engineers selling & maintaining technical products.  Technical specialties have become so sophisticated that it is not unusual to find individuals who are very focused and do not have the title of either engineer or technologist.  Consider the design and manufacturing of aircraft: Scientists - research new materials, such as composites. Research engineers - study the scientists’ input and develop feasible aircraft designs. Developmental and design engineers - work on implementing “flyable designs”. Manufacturing engineers & Technologists - preparing to manufacture the selected design. Technicians & craftspersons - involved in fabrication & testing all components, as well as assembling the aircraft. 2/28/2019

Origins Came into use in Middle Ages Origin of word is from “engine” and “ingeneous” which in latin means to create. 2/28/2019

The Engineering Profession Engineering is the profession in which a knowledge of mathematical and natural sciences, gained by study, experience, and practice, is applied with judgement to develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind. What is engineering? Difficult question! Engineers do so many different things. Engineers perform so many different functions. Here’s the standard definition: 2/28/2019

What is the difference between an Engineer and a Scientists Scientist conduct research by forming a hypothesis and then testing their hypothesis with experiments. Engineers are asked to solve problems by using different designs. 2/28/2019

The Engineering Design Process Need or Opportunity Problem Definition/ Specifications Data & Information Collection Development of Alternative Designs At the heart of engineering is the Engineering Design Process. This is a step-by-step method with the objective of producing a device, structure, or system that satisfies a need. Evaluation of Designs/ Selection of Optimal Design 1. Need established by customer missile for launching satellite Implementation of Optimal Design Opportunity identified by company little pieces of paper which could stick onto almost anything but could be removed easily without leaving any trace 2/28/2019 2. Need generally described by a set of specifications (specs) performance specifications (e.g. Weight, size, speed, safety, reliability) economic specifications (e.g. Cost, profit) scheduling specifications (e.g. Production & delivery dates

The Engineering/Technology Profession Engineering/Technology focuses primarily on the applied aspects of science and engineering, aimed at preparing graduates for practice in that portion of the technological spectrum closest to product improvement, industrial practices, and engineering operational functions. Engineering Technology draws upon the same body of knowledge as engineering centers more heavily upon the applications related to manufacturing testing construction maintenance field service marketing This could be for you if you enjoy building and making things and making things work Contains elements of science  engineering mathematics  mechanical skills abstract thinking  laboratory skills 2/28/2019

ENGINEERS TECHNOLOGISTS Scientists would most likely be found performing functions toward the left-hand side of the spectrum, while technicians and craftspersons would most likely be found doing the functions toward the right. Engineers & Technologists would see a great deal of overlap in their functional interests. They would most likely perform functions in the middle part of the spectrum. Scientists the basic nature of things trying to understand the “why” of things Engineers & Technologists trying to understand the the “how” of things how to take the findings of the scientists and use them to develop useful products for humankind 2/28/2019 Engineers - conceptual development of new products Technologists - improving existing technologies building & refining products

Major Engineering Disciplines Electrical (Computer) Engineering Mechanical Engineering Civil Engineering Chemical Engineering Industrial Engineering These are the five largest so-called traditional areas. Computer Engineering part of electrical engineering or as a separate department 81% graduated in these areas in 08/09 2/28/2019

More Specialized, Non-traditional Fields of Engineering Aerospace Materials Biomedical Ocean Environmental Petroleum Mining Nuclear Manufacturing 19% Graduated in these areas in 08/09 2/28/2019

Major Engineering/Technology Disciplines Electrical & Electronics Engineering Technology Computer Engineering Technology Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering Technology Civil & Construction Engineering Technology Architectural & Design Drafting Industrial Engineering Technology Industry does not make disciplinary distinctions between engineering and engineering technology These disciplines parallel their engineering counterparts Exist in almost one-to-one correspondence 75% of Associate of Science Degrees in 95/96 2/28/2019

More Specialized, Non-traditional Engineering Categories Aerospace Automotive Bioengineering Biomedical Chemical Engineering/Tech Management Geology Materials Science Metallurgical/Mining Nuclear Ocean Packaging Science Petroleum Systems And the list goes on... 2/28/2019

Project Based course Team members learn a required skill for construction of the project. Team is provided kit with most of the parts. At least one part must be machined in the CNC. Project will include presentations, reports, and deliverables throughout the semester 2/28/2019

Real World Examples Guest Speakers Earthquake engineer Civil engineer Electrical engineer Engineering/geologists Mechanical engineer Aerospace engineer Environmental engineer 2/28/2019

Why should you want to be an Engineer? Use math and science skills Get to play with some really cool “toys” Work outdoors, indoors, city or rural setting Make a good living Highest paying Bachelor’s degree Work with talented people Solve problems Make people’s lives better Do something useful for the world Respect Engineers are professionals People take their opinions seriously Job Satisfaction - Hopefully you are happy with the life work you choose. If not, find one that satisfies you! Challenging Work - intellectually stimulating; solving “real- world” problems. Intellectual Development - “exercises” your brain, developing your ability to think logically and to solve problems. Financial Security - Important, but not essential! Do something you enjoy! Variety - an enormous variety of jobs! Benefit Society - just about everything you do in this field is of benefit to the world we live in. How things work - engineering gives you an idea on how the things around you work. Prestige - highly respected! We play a role in competitive- ness, standard of living, security, and public safety. Environment - The latest and greatest tools and environment. Creativity - Playing with imagination and possibilities which can lead to new and meaningful connections/outcomes while interacting with ideas, people, and environment. 2/28/2019

Employment Opportunities As you can see, nearly two-thirds of the engineering/technology jobs occur in industry. But, as the world around us continually changes, there is always the opportunity for entrepreneurs and small business. You have probably heard that people may not end their careers in the same company they started with. You may change your job five or more times before hanging it up. The opportunity exists! 2/28/2019

Average Income of Engineers From the National Association of Colleges and Employers 2/28/2019

Important Fields of the Future Advanced Manufacturing Technologies Information & Communication Technology Advanced Materials & Processing Biotechnology Civil Infrastructure Systems Improved Health Care Delivery Advanced Environmental Technologies Keep your eyes and ears open! Be ready/willing to change! 2/28/2019

Engineering as a Profession You’re part of an “Engineering Enterprise”. You have knowledge & skill in specialized fields above that of the general public. You have a desire for public service and a willingness to share for the benefit of others. You participate in professional groups. You participate in advancing professional ideals and knowledge. 2/28/2019
