Northeast Sales Training February 27th 2013 Actuator Selection LINEAR ROTARY ¼-TURN

Information required to select and price an actuator Type & size of valve? Torque requirement? Valve stem diameter? Type of service (open/close, modulating)? Motor power (voltage/phase/frequency)? Closing time? Enclosure – watertight, submersible, hazardous location (NEMA 4, 4X, 6, 7) Non-intrusive?

Information required to select and price an actuator (continued) Ambient temperature Actuator accessories limit switches (2 GTLS, 2 GTLS-12, 4 GTLS) position feedback device (potentiometer, transmitter, MWG) mechanical devices (MDPI, stem protection tube, declutch lever lock) Motor controls integral or remote? who is furnishing controls? what controls are required?

Northeast Sales Training February 27th 2013 Quarterturn Selection Information required Manual selection Electric selection Multiturn Selection

Quarter-turn Sizing Valve torque and stem diameter must be obtained from the valve manufacturer. Valve torque and stem diameter must be measured in the field for retro-fit applications.

Actuator Selection and Pricing - Multi-turn

Multi-turn Selection and Pricing Valve torque and/or thrust must be obtained from the valve manufacturer. The valve stem diameter with pitch & lead or number of turns are, also, required. Valve torque, thrust, stem diameter & threads must be measured in the field for retro-fit applications.

Multi-turn Applications Multi-turn Selection and Pricing Multi-turn Applications SA.2 Technical Data - Multi-turn Actuators - Open/Close Service (Three phase & single phase) SAR.2 Technical Data - Multi-turn Actuators - Modulating Service SA.2/GK – SAR.2/GK Combinations for Multi-turn Actuators Selection Charts & Price List Multiturn Selection and Pricing Chart SA.2-three phase Selection SAR.2-three phase Selection SA.2-single phase Selection SAR.2-single phase Selection

Multi-turn Selection and Pricing Standard multiturn valve operating speeds: 12 inches per minute standard for gate valves 4 inches per minute standard for globe valves Required multiturn actuator operating speeds (SA actuator RPM): SA actuator RPM = Number of stem turns per inch X required stem speed Example: 4 turns per inch of travel X 12 inches per minute = 48 rpm The actuator output usually doesn’t exactly match the required speed, so we have to calculate the actual stem speed and inform the customer Example: 48 rpm is between SA speeds 38 and 54, so we will select 54 rpm Actual stem speed = 54 rpm ÷ 4 turns per inch = 13.5 inches per minute

Multi-turn Actuator selection example REQUIREMENTS 8” gate valve open/close service 5000 lbs. thrust 40 ft lbs. torque 1.25” diameter stem 4 threads per inch single lead 460 volt / 3 ph / 60 hz 12 inches per minute (IPM) No Motor Controls Required. Multiturn Selection Chart

SELECTION Previous Selection: SA10.1-54A NEW Selection: SA07.6-54A Optimal speed 12 in/min x 4 turns/inch = 48 rpm The closest ‘SA’ output speed is 54 RPM 54 RPM/ 4 turns per inch = 13.5 IPM stem speed ‘A’ output drive required to accept thrust
