Impressionism: Sunrise Claude Monet Media: oil paint Impressionism: Sunrise

Description The art contains a silhouette of two boats. This masterpiece contains strokes and smears. Since it was made with paint the texture would feel rubbery and bumpy. There is a yellow and Orange sun somewhere near the middle and the light of the sunshine is being reflected off the water. The sun of course is representing the sunrise. There is a boat that is closer to the viewer And a boat that is further behind into the sunset. He image used in the first slide was a much clearer picture. The masterpiece would usually have a grungy brown smear in the top left corner which looks kind of like chocolate. The background of the painting would usually be hard to see But the strange figures are other larger boats that look like they floating on the docks of the sea.

Analysis The main focal point in this masterpiece seems to be the silhouette of the two boats. It’s the biggest object in the painting, is the darkest, and is in the center. This makes good contrast with the bright orange sun that represents the sunrise.. Then you see the brown smears in the top left that represent steam from the boats in the background. The proportions are fine and you can tell the distance everything is from the sun .This painting creates a soothing feeling from the dusk colors that don’t burn your eyes when you look at them. The time of day seems to be early in the morning where people seem to be a bit more active.

Interpretation I feel like Monet is very appreciative of nature and which is why most of his masterpieces involve mostly nature. It’s like he wants us to mainly see the sunset and the water. This reminds me of times when I wake up early in the morning and drive towards the city with an orange/yellow sunset and a silhouette of buildings. This is what I would imagine a happy place to look like. Every time I look at this it calms me down. It just feels very serene. It’s also a very interesting setting with small boats and larger fishing boats in the background.

Judgement The idea behind how unique and the techniques the artist uses makes me feel successful. Simple techniques can make something so wonderful. And it’s very different from others where most artist make very realistic paintings of objects. Other artist did not use this type of art style. This may not be one of his most expensive masterpieces but this does show the development of his other pieces. The pastel colors compared to the bright orange sun makes great contrast. I think the artwork would look better with more slightly bright colors but not as bright as the main visual being the sunset. Some other artworks by this artist I’ve seen are very bright with a nice sunshine hitting the object or scene.
