Introduction to qualitative analysis software (NVIVO) Joe Taylor (psychology technician)

What we’re going to cover What is NVIVO? why consider using it? Gain experience of using NVIVO to code friendship data Ask questions when you’d like

Learning outcomes By the end of this session you will: Understand what NVIVO is and isn’t Understand how to use it for coding qualitative data Understand whether you might like to use it for your dissertation

What is NVIVO? A software package that works broadly in the same way as Microsoft Office Developed specifically for qualitative data analysis Helps organise source material

What NVIVO is not Does your data analysis for you Writes your dissertation Generates your argument Easy to learn very quickly

Why use NVIVO? provides a structure / framework as well as allowing coding of documents can also coding of video, tweets etc. speeds up your analysis (once you’ve got to grips with it!) can work with lots of transcripts allows easy sharing of documents can import audio files and allow you to transcribe from within the application can be used for literature reviews

When should I strongly consider using NVIVO? When you have lots of transcripts When you want to code video/audio interviews directly When you would like to share your analysis with others

Some NVIVO terminology NODE - a conceptual representation of codes that a researcher found significant during the analysis process using NVIVO Nodes can be represented diagrammatically and are graphically illustrated with a ball (as we will see)

More NVIVO terminology NODE TREE - logical composition of nodes into a tree hierarchy. Root of the tree is at the top SOURCE - documents (such as transcripts) that have been imported into NVIVO for analysis and your own ideas

The analysis process

Experience NVIVO Open NVIVO Learn about the user interface Save a new project Import two transcripts from SS511 Friendship Research resources Practice coding and learn about the different ways to code your data

Where can I get NVIVO? All university computers Psychology lab computers Purchase from the computer store for £5 for your own computer

Want to know more about NVIVO? Just get started - learn by doing Please pop into the psychology lab for a demonstration or group workshop http://www.qsrinternational.com/learning/nvivo-tutorials www.youtube.com/user/QSRinternational Gibbs, G.R.
