Thesis (1 pt) Presents a thesis that makes a historically defensible claim and responds to all parts of the question. The thesis must consist of one or more sentences located in one place, either in the introduction or the conclusion. /1 Argument Development: Using the Targeted Historical Thinking Skill - Comparison (2 pts) Describes similarities AND differences among historical individuals, events, developments, or processes. Explains the reasons for similarities AND differences among historical individuals, events, developments, or processes. OR (depending on the prompt) Evaluates relative significance of historical individuals, events, developments, or processes. Argument Development: Using Evidence Addresses the topic of the question with specific examples of relevant evidence. Utilizes specific examples of evidence to fully and effectively substantiate the stated thesis or a relevant argument. Note: Response must include a broad range of evidence that justifies the thesis or argument through analysis and/or explanation. Synthesis Extends the argument by explaining the connections between the argument and ONE of the following: A development in different historical period, situation, era, geographical area A course theme and/or approach to history that is not the focus of the essay (SPICE) A different discipline or field of inquiry (econ, gov, art…). Note: Requires explanation of connections, and is not awarded for a phrase or reference. Score /6

BAD Thesis: “There are many similarities and differences between _____ and _____, both socially and politically.” NEVER do that. You’ll lose the thesis point and turn your reader off to the rest of your essay.
Does it count? “The Aztec and Inca Empires were different in their political structure but similar in their religious life.” It’s kind of specific, but do you think it’s specific enough to be considered valid? NO - does not contain a specific, valid sim and a specific, valid diff.
Make the prompt into questions or tasks Unfree labor systems were used for agricultural production in the period 1450-1750.
