Thesis Present a thesis that makes a historically defensible claim and responds to all parts of the question. The thesis must consist of one or more sentences located in one place, either in the introduction or the conclusion. (1 pt) Mention specific examples of sims/diffs in thesis. BAD Thesis: “There are many similarities and differences between _____ and _____, both socially and politically.” NEVER do that. You’ll lose the thesis point and turn your reader off to the rest of your essay.

Does it count? “The Aztec and Inca Empires were different in their political structure but similar in their religious life.” It’s kind of specific, but do you think it’s specific enough to be considered valid? NO - does not contain a specific, valid sim and a specific, valid diff.

Make the prompt into questions or tasks Unfree labor systems were used for agricultural production in the period 1450-1750. Analyze the major similarities and differences between two of the following systems: Caribbean slavery West African slavery Russian serfdom What were the similarities in the unfree labor practices of ___ and ___. Why did these similarities exist? What unfree labor practices were unique to ___ and why? What unfree labor practices were unique to _____ and why?

Argument Development – Using the HTS/Comparison Describes similarities AND differences among historical individuals, events, developments, or processes. (1 pt) Explains the reasons for similarities AND differences among historical individuals, events, developments, or processes. (1 pt) OR (depending on the prompt) Evaluates relative significance of historical individuals, events, developments, or processes. (1 pt)

Argument Development - Using Evidence Addresses the topic of the question with specific examples of relevant evidence. (1 pt) Utilizes specific examples of evidence to fully and effectively substantiate the stated thesis or a relevant argument. (1 pt) Note: Response must include a broad range of evidence that justifies the thesis or argument through analysis and/or explanation.

Synthesis Extends the argument by explaining the connections between the argument and ONE of the following: A development in different historical period, situation, era, geographical area E.g. Precursor from an earlier era, ramification for a later era A course theme and/or approach to history that is not the focus of the essay (SPICE) E.g. Political issues relevant to a primarily economic prompt. A different discipline or field of inquiry (econ, gov, art…). (1 pt) Note: Requires explanation of connections, and is not awarded for a phrase or reference.

Organization 4 paragraph essay First paragraph: Thesis only, may need 2 sentences Second paragraph: Similarities tied to the prompt with analysis for each example (why does the similarity exist) Third paragraph: Differences tied to the prompt with analysis for each example (why does the difference exist) Fourth paragraph: Synthesis and Restated thesis

Time to Practice! With your table buddy complete the chart provided to come up with similarities and differences based on the following prompt: For the period from 1500 to 1830, compare North American racial ideologies and their effects on society with Latin American/ Caribbean racial ideologies and their effects on society.

You did it! Now we just have to practice until it becomes second nature.
