Adding and Subtracting Polynomials
Warm-up!! Good Morning!! Please pick up your calculator as you walk in! Classify the following polynomials (be sure to state the degree and type): x3 + x +1 14 x2 – 14x +27 4x + 15
Adding and Subtracting Polynomials What are like terms? Like terms have the same variables with exactly the same exponents Which of the following polynomials are like terms? A. 2xy B. 3ab2 C. -4a3b2 D. 17ab2 E. 9mn
You Try!! Which of the following polynomials are like terms? -5a3b5 46f3 -85f3 0.03f3g 7f3
Adding Polynomials The easiest way to add polynomials is the vertical method. How to use the vertical method: Line Up Like Terms Add the coefficients. Keep the variables the same.
Examples 1. (4x2 + 6x +7) + (2x2 – 9x+1) 2. (x2 + x + 1) + (5x2 - 8x +20)
Examples Continued 3. (7y3 – 3y2 + 4y) + (8y4 + 3y2)
You Try!! (7a3 – a + 3a2) + (8a2 - 3a – 4)
Subtracting Polynomials The easiest way to add polynomials is the vertical method. It is just like when we added polynomials with one extra step. How to Use Vertical Method: Distribute the negative to everything in parenthesis Line up like terms Add the coefficients. Keep the variables the same.
Examples 1. (2x3 +5x2 - 3x) - (x3 - 8x2+11) 2. (6x2 -3x +1) - (x2+x -9)
Examples Continued 3. (-7z3+3z -1) - (-6z2+z+4)
You Try!! (2x3 - 5x2 -1) - (8x3+3 - 8x2)
