A HOPE FOCUSSED ON THE END “Set your hope fully on the grace … by preparing your minds for action and by being sober.” 13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 1 Peter 1:13 (KJV 1900) This point is important because we can see more clearly the connection between the preceding paragraph and vv. 13–16. Peter emphasized in vv. 3–9 that the salvation of believers is eschatological, that it is an end-time hope. Now he urges them to set their hope completely on the grace that will be theirs “at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (RSV, en apokalypsei Iēsou Christou).

A DIVINE CALLING …As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance, But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. (1 Peter 1:13-16) Our hope is focused on the return of Christ, not on this moment Our calling, i.e. what we are to be busy about right now in conjunction with our hope, is to be holy SETTING ONE’S HOPE ON CHRIST’S COMING MEANS LIVING HOLY NOW!!!
A DIVINE CALLING “fashion” “conform” - to form according to a pattern or a mold (BDAG) to form or mold one’s behavior in accordance with a particular pattern or set of standards (Louw-Nida) The passage deals with both my inward disposition, hope, and with my outward manifestation - behavior …As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance, But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. (1 Peter 1:13-16) Notice the point - my outward behavior demonstrates reliably my inward disposition And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him; Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man. (Mark 7:18–23)
A COMPLETE CHANGE this hope that works change is to be seen in every aspect of our life Such a man turns away from his former lusts - 1Pet 4:1-3 He disciplines his mind and thinks clearly about his actions seeking to emulate God in his daily walk …But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. (1 Peter 1:15–16)

“Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joy and a glad heart, for the abundance of all things; therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the Lord will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in the lack of all things; and He will put an iron yoke on your neck until He has destroyed you. ” (Deuteronomy 28:47–48) Naked = Shame
