The Russian Revolution

Revolution Strikes lead to revolution in St. Petersburg 1917. Soldiers join workers in protest. Tsar abdicates.

Unity while overthrowing old regime Provisional Government set up. Karensky leads provisional government Lenin returns to Russia and seized opportunity to take control. He took over the soviet of Petrograd. Bolshevik Red Guards seized the Winter Palace. Symbol of workers taking control of government.

(1918 – 1921) Civil War breaks out, Reds vs. White. 15 million died Disunity and conflict over founding new regime (1918 – 1921) Civil War breaks out, Reds vs. White. 15 million died By 1920, Red Army had seized power

One set of revolutionaries eliminates/persecutes others Lenin instituted a series of political and economic reforms to recover from civil war. Bolsheviks renamed themselves the Communist Party Wrote a constitution based on democratic and socialist ideas, but the Communist party held all of the control.

Small, organized minority suppresses ALL opposition to defend or advance revolutionary cause Stalin and a small group of trusted officials uses terror to suppress ALL opposition. Economically he established 5 year plans setting Impossible quotes Established collective farms which led to famine.
