She says “I like to combine ambient light with a strobe, I do it a lot She says “I like to combine ambient light with a strobe, I do it a lot. It allows my background to become seamless in a way, very flat. The image itself becomes almost one dimensional. By lighting the subject I find they pop forward, then I leave the camera open to get the background.” about her photography techniques.
Annie Leibovitz is self-employed.
People have seen her with a Hasselblad, an RZ67, a Nikon digital, a Canon digital and some digital back on a Mamiya. She is Annie Leibovitz and she'll use whatever camera works best for her.
When Annie started shooting portrait, she would only bring one light and an umbrella. For many years that was her go-to-setup which created some of the most iconic images we know. Today, she has progressed and moved into several different diffusion methods. She uses one Profoto Acute Headand, one large soft modifier; a 60" Photek Softlighter II.
In high school, she became interested in various artistic endeavors, and began to write and play music. She attended the San Francisco Art Institute, where she studied painting. Annie’s first photo shoot was when they (her father and she) were in Philippines during the Vietnam war.
She started her career as a staff Photographer with the rock music magazine Rolling Stone In 1970. Annie created a new image of Rolling Stone with her personalized Photographs of celebrities, and her unique technique of ‘bold primary colours’ and ‘surprising Poses’.
In 1983, Leibovitz left Rolling Stone and began working for Vanity Fair. With a wider array of subjects, her photographs for the magazine ranged from presidents to literary icons to teen heartthrobs. Annie’s shoots also became known for over-the-top budgets that would later be at the center of major financial challenges.
Her work, her pictures and all the effort she puts into her work is stunning. I selected her, because I really like her set up of and the photos.
