Essential Questions About Conflict Incorporating Civics Into a History or Social Studies Class with a Thematic Approach

Why do countries go to war? What are some common causes of conflict throughout history? Can you think of specific examples of wars or conflict?

Why should countries go to war? Are some causes of war “good” or “just”? What makes a war legitimate? What would make you volunteer to fight in a war?

Can nations cooperate with each other? Do countries fight all the time? Can you think of examples in history of how nations have worked together cooperatively? What can be done today to promote more cooperation and less conflict? Is conflict inevitable or can cooperation be maintained permanently?

Wrap Up Writing Assignment Based on today’s discussion, answer the question, “Why do countries go to war?” Support your answer with three examples – historical or hypothetical – of why countries go to war, and explain whether you believe these are acceptable reasons. Wrap Up Writing Assignment
