6X 3-9-2015 Objectives: Describe key Islamic beliefs. Describe Muslim empires. Agenda: Do Now: Compare Islam and Christianity. What things do they have in common? What beliefs do they have that are different? Discuss key Islamic beliefs (notes from section 2) and Do Now Begin Section 3 Homework: Return your chapter 11 Test with a parent signature.

Same Different Monotheistic – they believe in the same God. We both believe in prophets. We both have holy books to follow Both were persecuted and had times of great influence Places of Worship There is a beginning and an end of the world Afterlife Roots from Judaism Both celebrate their origins – Christmas and Ramadan Both started in the Middle East Meditations and fasting Yearly donations Both religions are still common today Holy relics They’re both WORLD RELIGIONS Both really value relationship with God and the community – taking care of others. Islam – Arabia v. Christianity – Rome Muslims: Koran; Christians: Bible Muslims: Mosques vs. Christians: Churches Islam: Paradise vs. Christians: Heaven – we get to see God. Islam calls God Allah Islam – the 5 pillars (1-saying there is one God and Muhammad is his prophet 2 – pray 5x a day 3 – Give to the poor and needy 4- Fast during Ramadan 5-make a hajj at least once in your life) v. Christians have the 10 Commandments Catholics – have the Eucharist and the True Presence Christianity – Jesus is the Messiah, in Islam He is just a prophet. Islam – no separation between government and religion – There are Muslim countries who follow Sharia Islam started in 610. Christianity started around 1 AD Women are supposed to look after kids Islam practices polygamy – men can marry up to 5 wives. Christians have Lent and Advent, Easter Muslims must wash themselves before they pray. V. Christians wash themselves before entering the Church – Baptism Muslims don’t drink alcohol or eat pork. Christian sacraments Founders: Islam- Muhammad, Christianity – Jesus Priests and religious life Paradise – physical – food, etc. Heaven – spiritual Catholics – Purgatory Christianity has many sects Islam has two main sects

Qur’an for daily life Pilgrimage to Mecca (hajj) is very important. Every Muslim must make a hajj at least once in their life. Christians fast for Lent; Muslims fast for Ramadan Afterlife – Muslims – Paradise; Christians – Heaven. Will see God.
