Grin and Bear it

Sometimes, you should Grin and bear it Aka “Go the with the flow” Aka “Play the game” Aka “Suck it up” Aka “Deal with it” “Grin and bear it” means suffering through an unpleasant circumstance without showing (with your words and body language) that it’s unpleasant

When and how should you grin and bear it? A trusted adult has given you a reasonable request The request: Doesn’t make you feel unsafe or uncomfortable Doesn’t go against your beliefs or morals Isn’t impossible to complete You should grin and bear it by: Saying “ok” Completing the request Having positive body language and words Later, when you are finished, you can talk to the adult about other options for the future

Guided Practice! Show the class how you would grin and bear… Your teacher asked you to stop sharpening your pencil because it was too loud. The lunch lady said that we were lining up against the opposite wall today. Ms. Martha in the office asked you to take a stack of papers to room 137. The lesson today is so boring– you learned this stuff already in like second grade!

Independent Practice! You will receive a paper for your notebook. You need to cut out the paper along the lines, then glue or tape it in so that you can write underneath the flaps. Underneath each flap (with a scenario), write what you could do to grin and bear the situation. Remember, it should involve your version of saying ok, completing the request, and having positive body language and words! Don’t forget to give the page a heading! (Maybe “Grin and Bear It”?)
