It’s better if you try to memorize them in groups based on similarities. Here’s a few relationships you might find useful. HIGHLIGHT FORMULAS AS THEY ARE DESCRIBED. Replacing the oxygen by sulfur, we get SCN with a -1 charge…, this ion is called thiocyanate. You can see that “cyan” is associated with carbon and nitrogen. In fact, cyanide, is CN with a –1 charge. The other choices given here are all commonly-occurring ions containing sulfur. Choice B, S2O6 with a –2 charge is dithionate. Choice C. S2O4 with a –2 charge is dithionite. This is one case where ions with “ate” and “ite” do not differ by only one oxygen. Instead, the dithionate has two more oxygen atoms compared to dithionite.
