Dynamics of Care in Society Teamwork & Leadership

Do Now: Time Capsule This is a good exercise for practicing reaching consensus and for team members to understand each others' values. Have each member of the team list five health related items that they feel should be included in a time capsule that will be opened by another civilization in 100 years’ time. Each member of the team should then explain the reasons for their choice. The team then reaches consensus on which five items should be included in the time capsule. TEAM Exit Card: write their final choice of items on an index card and discuss and defend their choices with the whole group.

TEAMWORK Many professionals with different backgrounds, levels of education, and interests working together for the benefit of the patient. In the Team Approach…all members are of equal value, providing mutual respect for contributing their expertise for the good of the patient & team.

Patients and family members should be considered as part of their own health care team

"What's that like for you?" "What happened to me was _____." ""That happened to me, but I want to know: How are you?" "You should try _____." Advise nothing, or only offer a resource if it's requested. "Did this happen because you _____?" "What is known about why this happened?" (Ask "why" questions cautiously.) "Oh no! But what about _____?" Be concerned, but stay calm and offer no examples of worst case scenarios. "I wouldn't worry." Listen to the source of worry. "You're a saint. I could never do it..." "You're doing a great job under the circumstances."
