Reaction Types

Synthesis A + B → AB Two or more elements or compounds combine to form a single new compound Examples H2 + O2 → H2O CO + O2 → CO2 CaO + H2O → Ca(OH)2

Decomposition AB → A + B Single compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances Catalyst – substance that speeds up a reaction without altering it

Decomposition Examples HgO → Hg + O2 NaCl → Na + Cl2

Combustion Reactions Hydrocarbon- compound of C, H and sometimes O Hydrocarbons combine with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water Examples CH4 + O2 → CO2 + H2O C2H8 + O2 → CO2 + H2O C6H12O6 + O2 → CO2 + H2O

Determine What Type of Reaction Each Is, Complete, and Balance H2 + O2 → Na + Cl2 → Al2O3 → C12H24 + O2 → CO → NH3 + HCl → CCl4 →
