STRUCTURE AND MOVEMENT
Presentation transcript:

Your framework or skeleton is made up of all the bones in your body. The Skeletal System Your framework or skeleton is made up of all the bones in your body.

LEARNING GOAL: ISN 58 Describe the structure and function of the human skeletal system.

WHERE ARE YOU ON THE LEARNING SCALE ISN58-59 1. Define Week 29 vocabulary. 2. Describe structure & function. 3. Describe the function & structure of the human skeletal system 4. Analyze the cause and effect of bone disease and find ways to keep bones healthy for optimum function.

What are bones? Bones are : complex living structures that grow, develop and repair themselves. strong and lightweight Made up of bone tissue, blood vessels, & nerves.

5 Major Functions of the Skeleton 1. Give shape & support 2. Allow movement 3. Protects organs 4. Produces blood cells 5. Stores minerals & other materials until needed by the body

Shape & Support Made of 206 bones Different shapes/sizes

Movement Most bones are associated w/muscles Muscles team w/ bones to pull on them & make bones move

Protection Bones protect your organs Ex: Ribs protect heart &lungs skull protects brain

Produces blood cells Tissues (marrow) in long bones of the arms & legs make blood cells

Store substances Bones store minerals like calcium Release minerals as needed Also store fat (yellow bone marrow)

Bones made of bone tissue, blood vessels and nerves. strong as well as lightweight grow as you grow Even when you are grown -keep making new bone tissue when you use them (weight bearing), building strength

Baby bones Soft and flexible, mostly cartilage

Healthy bones Eat well balanced meals/snacks Exercise, exercise and continue to exercise all of your life!!!

Osteoporosis Bones: become weak Break easily More hollow AVOID THIS BY EATING WELL AND …. EXERCISING, EXERCISING…you get the idea
