U.S. Population by Region 1910 percent of population Total population: 92,228,531 Northeast 28% Midwest 32% West 8% South 32% Source: U.S. Census Bureau

“America is a growing dynamic country whose population will increase 50 percent over the next 50 years. Almost 90 percent of that increase will be in the minority community; and this is where the emerging markets will take place in America. It is clear that both Fortune 1000 companies and minority businesses need to pay attention to this growing population.” Daley, William M. U.S. Department of Commerce, Minority Business Development Agency. The Emerging Minority Marketplace. Minority Population Growth 1995 to 2050. Report by Wan He and Frank Hobbs, U.S. Census Bureau.

U.S. Family Households 1950 9% 39% 4% 48% Other family without children Married couple without children Single parent with own children 9% 39% 4% Married couple with own children 48%

U.S. Family Households 2010 28% 42% 20% 10% Married couple without children Other family without children 28% 42% Married couple with own children 20% Single parent with own children 10%

Population Changes Population migration, cultural diversity and family demographics have seen great changes in the United States during the past few decades For more statistical information regarding population changes, visit the following websites: U.S. Census Bureau: http://www.census.gov Population Reference Bureau: http://www.prb.org

Changing Social Demands Caused by the population changes in the United States Fast-paced life more single-parent homes and broken families increased homes with two working parents advanced technology and telecommunications Wanting more for the money consumers want a higher standard of living and more quality for less money

Effects of Change Increased competition Marketing mania caused by world trade and global resources created and driven by discount stores hurt “mom and pop” stores Marketing mania companies have to become more familiar with different cultures more advertisements are being targeted to minorities and the elderly companies thrive on marketing the “convenience” of their product

Effects of Change Service influx Global competition companies locally and internationally are required to provide more and better services Examples include: fast food, longer hours to meet needs, day cares, delivery services Global competition organizations compete around the world organizations sell products in foreign countries

Increased Global Competition Has occurred in the past few decades for many reasons, including: foreign countries have become more industrialized have begun inventing and producing more products for consumers have learned how to produce products more efficiently Americans have begun purchasing more foreign products have put more pressure on domestic companies to perform Has made effectiveness and efficiency critical

Effectiveness vs. Efficiency offering goods/services consumers want quickly producing and delivering goods/services with high quality producing goods/services quickly and at a low cost Goal of the two: highest possible quality at the lowest possible price

Effectiveness Can be increased by: gathering information from consumers studying consumer buying habits testing new products adding new features to current products offering warranties and guarantees on products

Efficiency Is crucial to American companies’ successes in the past and future of global competition Companies have increased their specialization and technology To continue success, companies will have to constantly evaluate productivity and efficiency

Workplace Technology Plays an essential role in how today’s businesses function and communicate with others around the world Is relied upon by businesses to help them operate more efficiently and effectively Enables people in the workplace to work faster, more accurately and, in some cases, in ways previously not possible

Workplace Technology Is changing the profile of today’s workplace all companies have been automated through the use of computers, robots and other labor-saving devices there is an increase in demand for technological workers to develop new technology and the accompanying software an increase in education and training are needed for all workers in today’s society in order to receive high-paying jobs
