Student Learning Showcase Update September, 2014

Why did it start? Oakland Schools had a Sharing Day for elementary and middle schools, high schools were not included Troy School District sent teams from each school Troy School District teams rarely stopped to see what each other were doing, thinking they could always see those ideas later There was no ‘later’ to see the ideas of other Troy schools

What did it look like in the beginning? All 12 of the elementary schools, 4 middle schools and the 3 high schools participated Each school made a data wall to showcase their goals and data around their goals Each school was given three to four subs to attend the showcase Schools sent groups of teachers to see the showcase There were no formal presentations, everyone just walked around and explored the data walls

What changes have been made? Two years ago, we opened it up to the community in the late afternoon and early evening Subs were cut to two per building - last year Displays now present the most successful or important strategy in the building

What else has changed? Presentations do not have to be a board - last year there were iPads, computers, projectors and TVs Schools now volunteer to do a formal presentation, in addition to having a display There are three rounds of presentations Each school that volunteers to present presents twice Other schools choose the topic that interests them and attend the presentations

Where are we going with the Student Learning Showcase? Teams from each school will be attending a School Improvement Roll-Out Session in September. At that time, we will gather information from the participants about the future of the Student Learning Showcase What do you think the purpose of the Student Learning Showcase should be? How should the event be scheduled? Which stakeholders should participate in the event? What are the strengths of the event? What can be done better?

Your thoughts? Please send those to us to consider as well.
