Complex and Compound-Complex Sentences What is a Complex Sentence? A complex sentence has ONE INDEPENDENT CLAUSE AND ONE OR MORE DEPENDENT CLAUSES. How is a Complex Sentence formed? IC = SC I will help (IC – independent clause) + if you need me (SC – subordinate clause) = I will help if you need me. (Complex sentence with the SC clause placed at the end of the sentence.)

Dependent/Subordinate Clauses Will begin with a subordinate conjunction: as, although, after, while, when, unless, because, before, if, since (AAAWWUBBIS words) and Will contain both a subject AND a verb, but Do NOT make complete sentences by themselves.
