UNIT 3: THE POWER OF OPINION LET’S GET A.C.T.I.V.E LEARNING TARGET: I CAN INCORPORATE A.C.T.I.V.E READING STRATEGIES TO COMPREHEND A COMPLEX TEXT.

A. Asking Questions WHILE READING WE SHOULD ALWAYS ASK QUESTIONS

Thick and Thin Questions Thin questions make you think as much, and have quick answers. Those answers are short and closed ended. How far? When? Thick questions make you think, and do not have quick answers. They are complex and open ended. Why? What if?

C. CONNECTIONS MAKE CONNECTIONS TO WHAT YOU MAY ALREADY KNOW, PRIOR KNOWLEDGE, OR TO WHAT YOU HAVE READ BEFORE… “THIS TEXT REMINDS OF ANOTHER STORY….”

T. TRACKING DOWN RELEVANT INFORMATION YOU MUST FIND EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT YOUR CLAIM. YOU CANNOT JUST GIVE YOUR REASONS, BUT YOU MUST BACK IT UP WITH RELEVANT EVIDENCE.

V. VISUALIZE THINK ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON YOUR HEAD… PICTURE IT…* “THERE WERE THREE BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLIES FOLLOWING ME THROUGH THE PATH”

E. END IT WITH A SUMMARY SUMMARIZE THE TEXT WITH KEY POINTS AND EVENTS FROM THE TEXT. IT IS ONLY IMPORTANT TO SUMMARIZE WHAT MATTERS THE MOST.
