Virus Removal Experiments with Meta-Hybrid CERA-System Luisa Ikner (UA), Yasuhiro Matsui (METAWATER), and Chuck Gerba (UA) RESEARCH PROPOSAL UA-P01-F2018 STATUS: New proposal Relationship to Technology Roadmap: Wastewater Reuse (Direct Potable Reuse) Background: Virus removal is a vital control point for the direct potable reuse Current virus log10 reduction credits for membrane filtration: microfiltration (0 log10), ultrafiltration (1 log10) To establish log10 reduction credits for virus removal, membrane filtration technologies must: demonstrate stability and perform consistently generate a sufficient amount of data under controlled conditions over time for statistical relevance be validated for virus removal under treatment plant conditions Approach (continued): Determine correlations between MS2 and PMMoV removal to assess the feasibility of PMMoV as an indicator of virus removal via membrane filtration Expected Findings: Meta-Hybrid CERA-System will achieve consistent MS2 removals of greater than 5 log10 Optimization of the virus concentration methods and qPCR assay will facilitate the use of PMMoV as an indicator of virus removal by the Meta-Hybrid CERA-System Objectives: Assess the removal of spiked MS2 virus (surrogate) using the ceramic membrane Meta-Hybrid CERA-System to generate > 20 data sets Evaluate the use of indigenous Pepper Mild Mottle Virus (PMMoV) as an indicator of human pathogenic virus removal Budget Requested: Total $30,000 Approach: Conduct a minimum of 20 removal evaluations of MS2 and PMMoV per CA Water Resources Control Board recommendations Analyze MS2 using both infectivity methods (plaque assay method) and molecular qPCR techniques to differentiate between inactivation and physical removal processes Project Duration: September 2018 – March 2019 Water & Environmental Technology Center
