Clara Barton By: Gillian Reed

About Clara Barton: Was born on December 25th, 1821 in Oxford, Massachusetts. Clara Barton was a pioneering nurse who founded the American Red Cross, and was a hospital nurse in the Civil War. Barton risked her life to bring supplies and support to soldiers in the field during the War. She became a teacher at age 15 and later opened a free public school in New Jersey. She moved to Washington, D.C., to work in the U.S. Patent Office as a clerk in the mid-1850s.

“Angel of the Battlefield” Clara was selfless and extremely devoted to what she did. Not content sitting on the sidelines, Barton served as an independent nurse and first saw combat in Fredericksburg, Virginia, in 1862. She also cared for soldiers wounded at Antietam. Barton was nicknamed "the angel of the battlefield" for her work.

What role did Clara Barton have in the war? She organized the American Red Cross and independently organized relief for the wounded and often brought her own supplies to front lines. Barton saw the need for an efficient organization to distribute food and medical supplies to the troops.
