9-4-12 Please start working on Bellwork #5. red pen, pencil, and book on desk.

1-5: ADDING INTEGERS p.23

ADDING INTEGERS SAME SIGNS: add and give the common sign. DIFFERENT SIGNS: find the difference, and give the sign of the larger absolute value.

EXAMPLE – same sign 14 + 9 = 14 and 9 are both positive. Add and the answer will be positive. 14 + 9 = 23 (-5) + (-8) = (-5) and (-8) are both negative. Add and the answer will be negative. (-5) + (-8) = -13

TRY THIS (-5) + (-1) = 16 + 12 = (-100) + (-52) =

TRY THIS (-5) + (-1) = 16 + 12 = (-100) + (-52) = -6

TRY THIS (-5) + (-1) = 16 + 12 = (-100) + (-52) = -6 28

TRY THIS (-5) + (-1) = 16 + 12 = (-100) + (-52) = -6 28 -152

EXAMPLE – different signs 7 + (-18) = signs are different subtract give the sign of the larger absolute value. (-18 is negative so the answer is negative.) 7 + (-18) = -11

TRY THIS -22 + 16 = 60 + (-13) = 12 + (-52) =

TRY THIS -22 + 16 = 60 + (-13) = 12 + (-52) = -6

TRY THIS -22 + 16 = 60 + (-13) = 12 + (-52) = -6 47

TRY THIS -22 + 16 = 60 + (-13) = 12 + (-52) = -6 47 -40

p.25 Example 5 -12 + (-6) + 15 + (-2)

p.25 Example 5 -12 + (-6) + 15 + (-2) -18 + 15 + (-2) -3 + (-2) -5
