Chapter 1 When and where is the first chapter set? What are the narrator’s spirits affected by? Describe how the narrator came to buy his house. How old was he when he first saw Monk’s Piece and how long had he been widowed? Who is he now married to and where did he propose? Find 3 quotations which suggest something important/unpleasant happened in the narrator’s past. Find names, ages and any facts about Esme’s children. How are Esme’s children occupying their Christmas eve? Give four ingredients of their ghost stories. Find a quotation that shows the narrator feels uneasy about them telling ghost stories. What does the narrator do when he is pressed to tell a ghost story? Find out the author and title of the poem which appears on page 12.
