Introduction to Orthodox Christianity The current estimate for the population of Orthodox Christians is between 225-300 million members. This makes it the second largest single Christian denomination behind the Catholic church. Orthodox Christianity originated at the time of schism in 1054 between Rome and Constantinople. It spread throughout the Middle East, the Balkans and Russia and its Centre was Constantinople, also known as “New Rome” The founder of Orthodox Christianity is said to be Paul the Apostle.
