Gluten Free Diet: Necessity for Celiac Disease By: SkyRoots

What is Celiac Disease? Firstly let us understand what is Gluten? Gluten is a protein found in rye, barley or wheat. Gluten helps foods maintain their shape, acting as a glue that holds food together. ▪ The celiac condition is the one where gluten consumption may cause damage to the small intestine ▪ The reaction caused against gluten causes inflammation of the small intestine. The damage caused to the small intestine also lead to nutritional deficiencies as it affects the absorption of nutrition from the ingested foods.

Indians Suffer from Celiac Disease ▪ According to experts at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, celiac disease affects close to six to eight million people in India. ▪ The prevalence rate of celiac disease(including India) is understood to be 1% globally. ▪ In India, celiac disease is suspected to be more prevalent in north India population, where wheat is primarily grown and forms the staple cereal. ▪ The prevalence of celiac disease has been doubling every 20 years. ▪ The diagnosis rate of celiac disease is extremely low presently only about 5%. which means out of 100 people affected with celiac disease, 95 are not aware of this condition.
