Life as a Pioneer Third Grade Web Quest

Introduction You doze off and when you wake up you are sitting in a covered wagon next to two pioneer children, Anna and Caleb. The three of you are hungry and bored on what looks to be a long journey. You start trying to find things to do to make the time pass quickly.

Tasks Anna and Caleb are looking to you for ideas to help them not be bored. You will help them choose a meal that their parents will fix for dinner with the supplies you have brought in the covered wagon. You will find three toys in the wagon that you can play with on the journey. You will pick a pioneer song that you can teach them to sing. Finally, you will compare and contrast your life today with that of a pioneer child.

Task 1 Find a meal for your parents to cook. It can be breakfast, lunch or dinner. Click on the following pioneer recipes links for ideas Fill out a recipe card listing the ingredients and directions for cooking over an open fire.

Task 2 Go to the back of the covered wagon and choose 3 toys that you, Anna, and Caleb can play with while you are traveling. Click on the following pioneer toys links to see the types of toys that you may find in the back of your wagon. On the toy paper please list the three toys you chose and explain your reasons for picking those toys.

Task 3 Choose a song you’d like to teach Anna and Caleb to sing. Visit the following sites and choose your favorite song Write down the song title you selected and your favorite stanza from the song.

Task 4 Now that you have experienced a little of life as a pioneer child it is time to compare and contrast your life today with that of a pioneer child during the 1800’s. Use the Venn Diagram and choose 3 items to compare and three items to contrast.

Bravo! Now that you have chosen a meal to eat, selected three toys to play with, learned a new song and compared your life to a pioneer child it is time to wake up
