THE SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TEENS BY SEAN COVEY South Sumter Middle School M&M Time 2017-2018

ACTIVITY 1 Take a few minutes to answer the following: Pinpoint the area of your life where you struggle with comparisons-clothes, physical features, friends, attention from boys/girls, talents, etc.? Where I’m struggling most with comparisons….

SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TEENS HABIT 4: THINK WIN-WIN

WIN-WIN IS NOT…. WIN-LOSE – THE TOTEM POLE Definition: “…an attitude toward life that says the pie of success is only so big, and if you get a piece there is less for me. Sean Covey, Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Page 147 Totem Pole Syndrome: I don’t care how good I am as long as I’m a notch higher than you on the totem pole. Win-Lose wears many faces: Using people for your own selfish purposes Trying to get ahead at the expense of someone else Gossiping or spreading rumors Insisting you always get your way Getting jealous when something good happens to others

WIN-WIN IS NOT…. LOSE-WIN – THE DOORMAT Definition: “I, for one, am a peacemaker. I’d rather take the blame for just about anything than get into an argument.” Sean Covey, Seven Habits of highly effective Teens, Page 149 The Doormat Syndrome: Have your way with me. Wipe your feet on me. Everyone else does. Lose-Win will find yourself: Setting low expectations and compromising your standards Giving in to peer pressure

WIN-WIN IS NOT…. LOSE-LOSE – THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL Definition: “If I’m going down, then you’re going down with me, sucker.” Sean Covey, Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Page 151 The Downward Spiral: Misery loves company Lose-Lose characteristics: Revenge Win at all costs Obsessed with others

WIN-WIN IS…. THE ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT-BUFFET Definition: Everyone can win! Sean Covey, Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Page 152 The all you can eat buffet: There is plenty of success to go around. It’s not a matter of who gets the biggest piece of pie, there’s enough to go around. Win-Win is contagious: Big-hearted, committed to helping others succeed, willing to share recognition Never underestimate what can happen when you change your mindset

AVOID THE TUMOR TWINS Competition and Comparison Competition is healthy when you compete against yourself, or when it challenges you to reach and stretch and become your best. Competition becomes dark when you tie your self-worth into winning or when you use it as a way to place yourself above another. COMPARISON The only good comparison is comparing yourself against your own potential Comparing yourself to others is bad news: We’re all on different social, mental, and physical timelines.
