BLOCKING IT ALL STARTS HERE

BLOCKING Today, we will focus on blocking. Why? Because blocking is offense and offense is blocking – Period. There are two steps to good blocking: Step 1 - Finding the right defender to block Step 2 - Blocking that defender with good technique (firing off fast, low, correct footwork, correct angle, etc…) Today, we will focus on Step 1 - finding the right defender to block. We will work on technique in practice

BLOCKING Finding the right man to block is important because teams will run all kinds of different defenses against us: 5-2 Monster 5-3 Wide Tackle 6 6-2 4-4 46 Gambler Gap – Air - Mirror Easy! We use two Simple Rules to find the right man to block and they work against any defense. How do you know which man to block?

G.O.D. Blocking inside Gap On Down inside Gap On Out The second rule we will use is G.O.O. and it’s very similar to the G.O.D. rule The first rule we use is called G.O.D. G.O.D. stands for: G.O.O. stands for: inside Gap On Down inside Gap On Out We’ll explain the GOD rule first, then the GOO rule The GOD and GOO rule are used by Guards, Tackles and Tight Ends to find the correct man to block. The center has his own simple rule that we will teach the centers at practice

G.O.D. Blocking How does G.O.D. rule work? Simple – G.O.D. is an easy three step process. Step 1 - you look in your inside GAP. If there is a man there BLOCK him. If no one is there….. Step 2 – you look for a defender On you. If a defender is ON you, BLOCK him. If no one is there…. Step 3 - Block the next defender Down from you That’s how it works, really simple. But was does inside GAP, On and Down mean? We’ll explain…...

inside Gap in GOD Blocking A gap is the space between linemen (blue arrows). This gap space is not very big, maybe the size of a football. Some linemen have TWO gaps. For example: The Right Tackle has two gaps If there is a defender in your inside Gap, BLOCK HIM. Look no further, you have found the correct man to block. One to his left One to his right The inside GAP is simply the gap closest to the ball (or center). C E T G G T E Left End Left Tackle Left Guard Center Right Guard Right Tackle Right End

On If there is no defender in your inside Gap, you then look for a defender On you.. So, if there is no one in your inside Gap, but there is a defender On you – BLOCK HIM. Look no further, you found the correct man to block. So…..what does On mean? On means a defender’s helmet is between your shoulder pads (the purple bars). The “On” defender may be lined up on your left shoulder, nose to nose with you or toward your right shoulder. If the defenders face mask is between your shoulders – he is ON you. 2 C G

Down If there is no defender in your inside Gap or no defender On you, block the defender Down from you. OK, lets go through the GOD process for the Right End So, what does Down mean? First, he checks his inside gap No one is there Down simply means toward the center just past your inside GAP. A Down defender is usually ON your inside neighbor. For example, #5 is ON the right tackle and DOWN from the Right End. Next, he checks ON him No one is there So he blocks DOWN (#5) Down 2 5 6 What about #6? Who blocks him? A running back will take care of #6, don’t worry about him C G T E Right End

GOD Blocking & Double Teams Left Guard: The great thing about the GOD rule is you get Double Team blocks! Let’s look at the left side of the line as a unit: Inside gap – No one is there Here’s what it looks like! ON – No one is there Block Down on #4 Left Tackle: 7 4 Inside gap – No one is there ON – #7 is there – BLOCK HIM C E T G We call that a Double – Double (Two Double Team Blocks!) Left End: Inside gap – No one is there ON – No one is there Block Down on #7

Inside Gap (gap toward the center) GOD Summary Pretty Simple, right? GOD is a simple three step process used by Guards, Tackles and Tight Ends to find the correct man to block. Inside Gap (gap toward the center) Down On C G Now, let’s take a quick look at the GOO blocking rule:

GOO Blocking GOO is very similar to GOD – it’s a three step process to find the correct man to block GOO = inside Gap (the gap toward the center) On (defender’s helmet is between your should pads) Out Inside Gap and On mean the same thing as in the GOD rule, the only new term is Out. We’ll explain GOO and Out – it’s really simple!

Out Here’s how GOO Works: If there is no defender in your inside Gap or no defender On you, block the defender Out from you. OK, lets go through the GOO process for the Right Tackle First, he checks his inside gap No one is there So, what does Out mean? Out means away from the center. For example, #5 is Outside of the Right Tackle. Next, he checks ON him No one is there So he blocks Out (#5) OUT 2 5 6 C G T E Right Tackle

GOD & GOO Summary So that’s it – two simple blocking rules. GOD and GOO are three step processes used by Guards, Tackles and Tight Ends to find the correct man to block GOD rule is: GOO rule is: Inside Gap (gap toward the center) Inside Gap (gap toward the center) Down Out On On C C G G Remember, terms like inside, DOWN and OUT are based on where the football is: Inside and Down are toward the ball (or center who has the ball). Out is away from the ball (or center who has the ball).

Blocking THE TEAM IS COUNTING ON YOU!! Blocking is the most important aspect to offense! The simple GOD and GOO rules help you find the correct man to block! Once you understand the GOD and GOO rules, you know 95% of the offense! SEE YOU AT PRACTICE!! If you need to, review this presentation a few more times. It only takes a few minutes and hopefully it’s fun. THE TEAM IS COUNTING ON YOU!!
