Reading Portfolio Assessment The Grade 3 Reading Student Portfolio provides multiple opportunities during the second semester to gather evidence of students’ reading mastery, which may be used in promotion decisions. 15 – 20 Passages with 8 – 10 questions per passage 1 – 2 passages per week Each passage assesses multiple standards Each standard will be assessed on multiple passages Students must correctly answer at least 3 questions for each and every standard in order to be considered for promotion to 4th grade (as an alternative to FSA score). Your child will take home a Portfolio Grade Summary each week to keep your informed of their progress. Please review, initial and return to your child’s teacher the following day. Portfolio Window: January 22nd – May 3rd

What are the Florida Standards Assessments and what it their purpose? All items are scored electronically. In Reading, up to half of the questions will be “enhanced items” that will require students to support their answers. State and District Requirements for Promotion Florida Statutes § 1008.25(6), prohibits social promotion indicating that no student may be assigned to a grade level based solely on age or other factors that constitute social promotion. A student’s progression from one grade to another is based on a student’s mastery of the state standards in English language arts, mathematics, science and social sciences. The determination to promote a student will reflect teacher judgment, progress tests, classroom assignments, daily observation, standardized tests, state assessments, and other objective data. To be promoted to fourth grade, a third grade student must score a Level 2 or above on the statewide FSA-ELA or meet a good cause exemption.

Multiple Opportunities to Demonstrate Proficiency FSA Level 2 or higher Reading Portfolio Demonstrate proficiency on each and every standard i-Ready D3 Demonstrate proficiency through a minimum score Summer School Demonstrate proficiency on ITBS

Good Cause Exemptions A student who demonstrates through a student portfolio that he or she is performing at least at a Level 2 . The M-DCPS Grade 3 Reading Student Portfolio is in place for all grade three students. Students who demonstrate an acceptable level of performance on an alternative standardized reading or English Language Arts assessment approved by the State Board of Education (i-Ready in May or ITBS in July) Limited English proficient students who have less than 2 years of instruction in an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program based on the Date of Entry into a US School
