Plantation Settlement the removal of the native population and replacement with English and Scots. Done first in Ireland. Resulted in 30,000 Irish being sold into slavery in Russia and the West Indies.
Jamestown, Virginia Arrive in 1607 After 3 years, a population of 500 in winter 1610 dropped to 60 by spring 1611. 1611 – 3 years of truce broken in raid for food.
George Percy "...My Lieutenant brought with him the Queen and her children and one Indian prisoner for which I taxed him because he had spared them. His answer was that having them now in custody I might do with them what I pleased."

Indentured servitude Sold labor for passage to Virginia Worked a set period of time, then freed. No slavery yet. life expectancy after arrival in Virginia was 5 years servants cost about 1/2 what a slave cost Virginians set a system of labor in place that treated people as "things."
Conditions Punishment involved physical torture Elias Hinton and Elizabeth Abbott Servants could be sold, leased, and punished at the whim of the owner.
Economic conditions lead to changes Increase the term of indenture 19 years old, serve a minimum indenture of 5 years. Under 19 years, serve until the age of 24. Elimination of land as “freedom due.” 1660s – 3 barrels of corn and a suit of clothes.
