Let's Talk about Drawdown Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming Edited by Paul Hawken This presentation is customizable to the individual library/community [Name]| [Library] New York Libraries Read Drawdown

[Optional] The Vocab Climate Change Greenhouse Gases Global Warming Climate change is a change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns when that change lasts for an extended period of time. Greenhouse Gases A greenhouse gas is a gas that absorbs and emits radiant energy within the thermal infrared range. The primary greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone. Global Warming Global warming is a long-term rise in the average temperature of the Earth's climate system, an aspect of climate change shown by temperature measurements and by multiple effects of the warming. Questions to ask audience: Do we know what we need to do in order to arrest and reverse global warming? Recognizable vocabulary – climate change, global warming, greenhouse gases, community impact

What is Drawdown? The point in time when the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere begins to decline on a year-to-year basis. The following language is optional: Drawdown is a GOOD THING. We want to see those emissions decreasing, so how do we help them go down?

The Book Edited by Paul Hawken Foreward (p. ix) We know we can't avoid the cataclysmic impacts of global warming by only focusing on achieving zero net carbon emissions; we must also rapidly re-sequester carbon. Drawdown – by identifying and researching dynamic, innovative solutions, creates the playbook for this urgent goal.

Buildings & Cities Energy Land Use Materials Transport Women & Girls What Can You Do? Buildings & Cities Energy Land Use Materials Transport Like a drop in a bucket, you can create ripples of change – in your home and community – that will increase drawdown. The book Drawdown is a solutions-based approach to climate change. Solutions are categorized within the following sectors – Buildings and Cities, Energy, Food, Land Use, Materials, Transport, and Women and Girls. Define Community Impact while identifying sectors – FAQ from Drawdown website – “already are being implemented by humanity around the globe and the potential of these solutions if they are scaled over the next thirty years” https://www.drawdown.org/frequently-asked-questions How can we exercise change, as a library and as individuals? Women & Girls Food

Drawdown EcoChallenge! How can we exercise change, as a library and as individuals? - By competing in challenges! https://drawdown.ecochallenge.org/about/event Highlights daily and one-time challenges, which range from solutions like reducing food waste to solar energy in office buildings. Select challenges your audience will relate to…strategies should be based on those your audience will recognize and find feasible and relevant to their life. April 3 – 24, 2019

Sustainable food makes us better, makes our communities better, and is better for the world. This slide highlights why taking on challenges from the Food Sector, we are improving our communities. The food system is elaborate and complex; its requirements and impacts are extraordinary. Fossil fuels power farming machinery, packing materials, refrigeration, etc. Chemical fertilizers atomize into the air, forming the powerful greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (p. 37).

Plant-Rich Diet Eco Challenges Sector: Food Solution #4 (p. 39-40) If 50% of the world's population restricts their diet to a healthy 2500 calories per day and reduces meat consumption overall, an estimated 26.7 gigatons of emissions could be avoided... Eco Challenges Reduce Animal Products Challenge yourself to enjoy [x] meatless or vegan meals daily Support Local Food Systems I will source [x] meals from local producers each day The food system is elaborate and complex; its requirements and impacts are extraordinary. Fossil fuels power farming machinery, packing materials, refrigeration, etc. Chemical fertilizers atomize into the air, forming the powerful greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (p. 37).

Reduced Food Waste Eco Challenges Sector: Food Solution #3 (p. 42-43) …if 50% of food waste is reduced by 2050, avoided emissions could be equal to 26.2 gigatons of carbon dioxide… Eco Challenges Keep Track of Wasted Food I will keep a daily log of food I throw away either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation Zero-Waste Cooking I will cook [x] meals with zero-waste each day The forecasts in the book are estimates from farm to household. The data shows that up to 35 percent of food in high-income economics is thrown out by consumers; in low-income economics, relatively little is wasted at the household level (p. 43) The EcoChallenge has so many more options available that won’t fit on this slide – smaller portions, learning the truth about expiration dates, composting!

Practice the "5 Rs" -- refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle. This slide highlights why taking on challenges from the Materials Sector, we are improving our communities. This section of the book contains the number 1 solution and details the common techniques and technologies critical to the effort to reverse global warming (p. 157) EcoChallenges include everything from properly disposing of refrigerants to eliminating toxic plastics.

Water Saving Eco Challenges Sector: Materials Solution #46 (p. 170) 95% adoption of low-flow taps and showerheads [by 2050] could reduce carbon dioxide emission by 4.6 gigatons… Eco Challenges Install a Toilet Bank I will reduce the amount of water flushed and save up to 11 gallons of water per day Fix Leaky Faucets Install Low-Flow Showerheads https://drawdown.ecochallenge.org/challenges/materials
