ETD – The Basics SIU theses and dissertations must be submitted electronically through the ProQuest submission site. Upload as one PDF file. Assistance with saving several Word or PDF files into one PDF file can be requested through etdsupport@siu.edu.

Tips for formatting Use the templates. Be consistent! Use same font style, same font size. Left justify text. Do not also right justify. Double space. Running heads/headers are not allowed. Be consistent with headings format.

Copyright Permission To use an already published work (text, photograph, drawing, data, etc.) in your paper, you must obtain permission from author or publisher Most publishers have forms to request permission on their websites. Cite source in paper AND insert permission letter/email in Appendices

Publishing Options Choose “Traditional Publishing” option ProQuest will upload your paper to OpenSIUC. OpenSIUC – access on campus Open Access – access everywhere – (optional – respond to OpenSIUC email) Interlibrary loan – up to 80% opensiuc@lib.siu.edu

Steps to Take Apply for graduation Download template to write paper Pass defense Upload pdf of paper to ProQuest - format check Submit forms to the Graduate School: Oral Defense, Thesis/Diss. Approval, Human Subjects Complete Survey of Earned Doctorates (PhD only) Multiple ETD revisions and reviews, if needed Email sent to student when ETD is accepted

Approval Forms Thesis/Dissertation Approval, Oral Defense Thesis/Dissertation Approval forms are archived with the paper in Morris Library Print on 25% cotton paper Signatures must be original – no fax, stamps, or color printer Create 2 originals for each, just in case Long distance member?
