Introduction to Life Science
Chapter 1, Section 1 What Is Life 7th Grade Life Science Mrs. Wright.
Characteristics of Living Things. Living Things Have Cells  Every living this is made of one or more cells (Cell Theory)  Living things can be unicellular.
What is Life? Objectives: 1. List the characteristics of living things 2. Explain where living things come from 3. Identify what all living things need.
1 Study of Biology The study of all living things Living things are called organisms Bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, & animals.
Collins I 5 lines Explain five characteristics that all living things share Explain five characteristics that all living things share –Use complete sentences.
Characteristics of All Living Things
1 Characteristics of Life. 2 What is Biology? Biology is the study of all living things Living things are called organisms Living things are called organisms.
Living Things. Organism A living thing. Plants, animals, fungus, bacteria, (virus), plankton, etc…
Living Things Notes: *What are the characteristics that all living things share? *How are all living organisms classified? NC Standards: 8.L.4.1.
Classification of Living Things. Characteristics of Life Cells- most basic unit of life. *Unicellular/Multicellular Ex. Animal, Plant, Bacteria.
6-2.1Summarize the characteristics that all organisms share (including the obtainment and use of resources for energy, the response to stimuli, the ability.
C HARACTERISTICS OF ALL ORGANISMS. It is essential for students to know the characteristics that separate living organisms from non-living things. All.
Is it living? Question: What are the characteristics of a living thing? Materials: wind-up toy Procedures: Experiment with the toy. Record your observations.

What Characteristics do Living things Share? Examine the toy with your group. Write the following questions and answer them. 1. What living characteristics does the toy have? 2. What non living characteristics does the toy have? 3. Is the toy living or non living? Give specific examples to support what you decide.

Characteristics All Living Organisms Share

Obtain and Use Resources for Energy Food, oxygen, and water, are resources that provide energy to live. Autotrophs make their own food through photosynthesis. Heterotrophs get their food from other plants and animals. Energy is released from food through respiration (it's a chemical process in cells) .

Respond to Stimuli Stimulus- a change in surroundings that cause a reaction Examples- light, temperature, sound, amount of water, space, amounts and types of food, other organisms Response- reaction to stimulus Ex: A pond dries up so deer migrate to another area to find water. Stimulus: The pond dries up. Response: The deer migrate. What is the stimulus and response for each picture on the left? Write your own example. Identify the stimulus and response.

Reproduce Asexual Reproduction- process involving 1 parent (offspring are identical to parent) Picture A: leaves and stems from a parent plant before it begins to reproduce. Picture B: the plant after it begins reproducing into a new plant. Sexual Reproduction- process that involves 2 parents (offspring have characteristics of both parents)

Grow and Develop Growth- process of growing larger. Ex: The plant grew 3 inches in one week. Development- process of growing more complex. Ex: The baby’s muscles have developed enough for him to crawl. Growth and development require energy. Happens in cells; all living things are made of cells.
