AIM: How are we going to prepare for the ILS Exam? 4/12/13 DO NOW: Put last night’s homework in the basket Pick up today’s worksheet Write tonight’s homework in your agenda HOMEWORK: ILS LE Review Book p. 7-14 (Questions #1-50) DUE- Monday – 8 AM

How are we going to review for the ILS Exam? Practical ILS Exam Date: May 22 or 23 ILS Exam Date: June 3 THE ILS is 20% of your FINAL GRADE ALL 43 Minutes of Class counts! Preliminary ILS Exams – ALL Count (April 19 & 21) (April 29 & 30) (May 13 & 14) Homework EVERY NIGHT and signed by your parent. Homework must be handed in by 8 AM when done on scan-tron Late Homework will not be accepted Quiz EVERY DAY!

What do all living things have in common? All LIVING THINGS are made of cells Cells are the basic units of structure and function of all life. Unicellular - one cell Multicellular – many cells

What structures are found inside of cells? Organelles

How can we describe the internal structures (organelles) of the cell? Controls what goes in and out of the cell Cell membrane - Cell Wall - Cytoplasm - Nucleus - Mitochondria - Chloroplast - Vacuole - Gives plant cells its shape. Protects the cell Jelly-like substance found inside of cells Controls ALL cell activities “Powerhouse” of cell – makes energy Makes food during photosynthesis Stores food and waste

How do Plant cells & Animal cells compare?

How do materials travel into and out of a cell? Diffusion- movement of materials into or out of a cell (HIGH to LOW concentration)

Draw Diffusion in a Cell oxygen

How does water move across the cell membrane? Osmosis- the diffusion of water into our out of a cell

Identify the Organelle from its function. Controls the cells activities and contains the chromosomes Creates energy for the cell Helps plants make their own food Found on the outside of plant cells, making them tough (hard) Determines what travels into and outside of cells. Nucleus Mitochondria chloroplast cell wall cell membrane

How do cells reproduce themselves? Mitosis. Asexual reproduction when one parent cell splits into two IDENTICAL daughter cells 4. 2. 5. 1. 3.

What do cells pass on to their daughter cells during mitosis? Chromosomes (DNA) Body cells have 46 chromosomes

Why do cells go through mitosis? To heal your skin To build and repair body tissue To grow

Summary Questions How do living things differ from nonliving things? How do plant cells differ from animal cells? Compare the parts of a cell to our school. Compare diffusion & osmosis. Explain how cells produce new cells.
