Bellringer – Please get one square of scrap paper off the front table. What is society like in a “State of Nature”?

Students will compare/contrast forms of government. Today’s Objective Students will compare/contrast forms of government.

In-class Assignment: 6WD Define the following terms using 6 words or less. You will need these for next class. Legislative Power Executive Power Judicial Power Constitution State Sovereign Chief of State (2nd half of def) Cabinet Ex) Magna Carta: document limited English King in 1215 (book definition: Great Charter forced upon King John of England by his barons in 1215; established that the power of the monarchy was not absolute and guaranteed trial by jury and due process of law to the nobility) A Day

Forms of Government - Authoritarian ABSOLUTE MONARCHY Rule based on one person. This person is considered royal and power passes from generation to generation in a family. OLIGARCHY Rule by a small group of people. Rulers are often connected by family, wealth, or military power. DICTATORSHIP A single person holds unlimited power. Most modern examples are totalitarian (all aspects of life are controlled) When laws are based on religion, the government is called a theocracy. Laws Laws are imposed on the people. People People are ruled from above and have no political voice

Case Studies: Students will first complete the Types of Government worksheet using the case studies. Then, student will present their info to the class. After everyone has presented, the groups will then complete the Advantages and Disadvantages worksheet.

Phrases to Know “consent of the governed” = the approval of citizens “rule of law” = government leaders aren’t exempt from rules. Government is limited in some way.

Authoritarian Case Studies Your group will complete a project describing one country’s government. Begin by answering the questions provided using the info sheet given. You will present your info to the class. Make sure that everyone participates in your group’s oral presentation. You will lose points if each person does not have a speaking part. Include a visual to illustrate something about the country. This may be a drawing of the current leader, a map, or something that symbolizes the government After presentations, you’ll complete a graphic organizer that shows advantages and disadvantages of each form of authoritarian government.
