Modern Misogyny Part 2

Academic frights From S** academics say Facebook page, 2018

REcap What does equality mean? How do men’s and women’s experiences differ? Safety Work Physical expectations What about people of color? LGBTQ* people?

Treatment of boys/men How are boys and men treated differently In media? In schools? If boys are disadvantaged in school, why are they less likely to go to college? How is this chapter similar/different from the one in Clash dealing with gender? How does gender relate to types of careers that people go into and what they are paid in those fields? What does Anderson suggest for increasing boys’ achievement in school? How do you think feminism affects the gender gap in college attendance?

Küçükşen (2016) Assessed 144 comments about gender inequality and gender equality of two social media sites “Ekşi Sözlük” and “Uludağ Sözlük” Comments were quite varied Some degrading women to being just a body, insulting them, etc. Others talked a lot about equality and justice for all Overall assessing the newer topic of social gender perception Küçükşen, K. (2016). Perception of gender equality in new media. International Journal of Human Sciences, 13, 1285-1292. doi:10.14687/ijhs.v13i1.3565

Subtypes of women and sexism What subtypes of women are there, and how are they perceived? Why was it Hilary vs. Trump? How do benevolent and hostile sexism affect women? Who holds them? Which do you think is more harmful to women: hostile or benevolent sexism? Why? Amy Cuddy’s MPA talk How are women leaders treated differently than male leaders? Role congruity theory, Eagly & Karau (2002)

Feminist identity How do researchers determine whether someone is a feminist? Liberal Feminist Attitude and Ideology Scale (Morgan, 1996) Feminist Perspectives Scale (Henley, Meng, O’Brien, McCarthy, 7 Sockloskie, 1998) Feminist Identity measures (Fischer, Tokar, Mergl, Good, Hill, & Blum, 2000) How do feminists differ from nonfeminists? How can a feminist identity help a person deal with gendered microaggressions? Is it “healthy” to be a feminist? Murnen & Smolak (2009) meta-analysis (p. 144, bottom of page)

del Prado Silván-Ferrero & López (2007) 139 high school students Mage = 21.8, SD = 1.65 Scales Ambivalent Sexism Inventory Ambivalence Toward Men Inventory Assessed housework contributions del Prado Silván-Ferrero, M., & López, A. B. (2007). Benevolent sexism toward men and women: Justification of the traditional system and conventional gender roles in Spain. Sex Roles, 57, 607-614. doi:10.1007/s11199-007-9271-8

Results: Showed a significant effect for hostility towards men, hostility towards women, and benevolence toward women Boys scored higher on benevolence towards men, and hostility towards women Girls scores higher on hostility towards men For girls there was a significant relation between hostility towards women and benevolence toward women Gendered housework significant for each group type of tasks, but girls do more non-gendered tasks del Prado Silván-Ferrero, M., & López, A. B. (2007). Benevolent sexism toward men and women: Justification of the traditional system and conventional gender roles in Spain. Sex Roles, 57, 607-614. doi:10.1007/s11199-007-9271-8
