Mark 15:1–20 Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole Council, immediately held a consultation; and binding Jesus, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate. 2 Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He answered him, “It is as you say.”

Mark 15:1–20 3 The chief priests began to accuse Him harshly. 4 Then Pilate questioned Him again, saying, “Do You not answer? See how many charges they bring against You!” 5 But Jesus made no further answer; so Pilate was amazed.

Jesus, Our Substitute Jesus will suffer, and He will be silent before trumped up charges, but He is not passive on the way to the cross. He is doggedly, determined to give Himself as a substitute, a payment for our sin, to be punished in our place – something only He is qualified to do as the Sovereign King, Silent Lamb, and Sinless Son of the Father.

Sermon in a Sentence To appreciate who Jesus is and what He has done for us: 1) we must understand Jesus is the King of the Jews, the King of Creation; 2) we must not mistake Jesus’ silence for weakness; 3) we must be released from death row by Jesus, God’s sinless Son (6–14); and 4) we must offer Him the worship He is due (15–20).

Jesus, Our Substitute With His silence, Jesus shouts, “Father take Me, and release Barabbas!”
