Protecting your children from sexual abuse online Wednesday 5th December 2018

Where is the world now?

Let’s start with the context What was the first thing you touched when you woke up this morning? Let’s start with the context

What is e-safety? E-Safety concerns safeguarding children and young people in the digital world. E-Safety emphasises learning to understand and use new technologies in a positive way. E-Safety is less about restriction and more about education about the risks as well as the benefits so we can feel confident online. E-Safety is concerned with supporting children and young people to develop safer online behaviours, both in and out of school.

Social Networking Social Networking sites are among the fastest growing phenomena on the Internet. Among the most popular social networking sites are Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest  and Twitter. All of them provide a excellent way  to stay in touch with family and  friends; sharing photographs and videos, comments or even playing online games. If used carelessly, however, they can expose you and your children to dangers.

Snapchat Most popular app in Britain at the moment Image Based App Pictures are taken and disappear after 10 seconds. Range of filters. Images can be stored or screen-shot Chat feature Snap Maps – show your location Snapchat

Instagram 2nd most popular app in Britain Image based app Pictures can be filtered and shared Pictures automatically public Ensure privacy settings are set to private.

YouTube YouTube allows you to watch, create and comment on videos. You can create your own YouTube account, create a music playlist, and even create your own channel, which means you will have a public profile. YouTube allows live streaming. Three clicks away from inappropriate content.

Tick Tock This social network app is from the creators of Musical.ly. As Musical.ly officially went offline earlier this year, Tik Tok has taken its place offering the user the ability to watch musical clips, create short clips up to 60 seconds and add special effects to them. All the content that was hosted on Musical.ly is now on TikTok. So if your child had a Musical.ly account they will now be able to access this content on Tik Tok. When you download the app users can see all the content without creating an account although they are not able to post, like or share anything until they’ve set up an account on the app. You can set up your account by using your existing Google, Facebook, Instagram account, via email or phone. By default all accounts are public so anyone on the app can see what your child shares. However, only approved followers can send them messages. Users can like or react to a video, follow an account or send messages to each other. There is the risk that strangers will be able to directly contact children on the app. Children may be tempted to take risks to get more of a following or likes on a video so it’s important to talk about what they share and with who. To delete an account you have to request a code from the app using a phone number.

Gaming

Gaming positives Increased level of problem-solving skills Sharpens hand-eye co-ordination Magnifies Teamwork skills Heightened concentration Enhanced critical thinking skills Link between gaming and endorphin hits

Gaming Downsides Average age of a gamer is 25-34 year old. Most games have a chat room function which means that children can be groomed very easily if privacy settings are not set correctly. Grooming is increasing either sexually or linked to radicalisation. Gaming Downsides

How does grooming work online? Grooming is about building a relationship with a child in order to later abuse them. This can be far easier online. Games, social media, live streaming platforms and chatrooms enable people to make contact with children to try to groom them. They can create multiple online identities and even pretend to be children and young people to trick real children into chatting and sharing. They can find out a lot about individual children before they make contact by looking at the things the child has posted.  Using this information they can target children who are particularly vulnerable and carefully plan what they will say and show an interest in.  They can also contact lots of children very quickly in the hope that one will respond.

Fortnite is a game that essentially idolizes survival skills Fortnite is a game that essentially idolizes survival skills. You're dropped from a battle bus and left to fend for yourself with 99 other individuals that are typically more than willing to eliminate your player. In Squad mode children can interact with anyone if privacy setting aren’t tight. Fortnite
