Eukaryotic Cell Structures 7th grade Life Science Betsy Sanford, LMMS

Living Things… …are called organisms. …are made of cells. Cells have parts that do certain jobs. Cell parts are called organelles.

Support & Protection Cells… …have support and protection. All cells have a cell membrane (10) that allows materials in and out of the cell All cells have cytoplasm (12), a thick fluid that surrounds the organelles. Plant cells have a rigid cell wall(5) for extra support. Eukaryotic cells also have a cytoskeleton that provides interior support and shape for the cell.

Eukaryotic vs. Prokaryotic Cells… Eukaryotic cell have a control center called a nucleus (8). The nucleus contains a chemical code called DNA (3). The DNA provides the instructions for cell structure and function. Prokaryotic cells have DNA, but no nucleus.

Gathering Energy Eukaryotic Cells… …need resources to live. Mitochondria (1) breakdown food using oxygen and generating energy for the cell. Chloroplasts (6) soak up sunlight and use it to make food that can be used for energy. Ribosomes (14) make proteins that cells need for growth, development, and repair. 14

Storage & Clean Up Eukaryotic Cells… …have storage and clean up organelles. Vacuoles (4) are storage areas (much larger in plants due to food production). Lysosomes (11) breakdown wastes and worn out cell parts.

Moving Materials Around the Cell Eukaryotic Cells… …have transportation and delivery within the cell. The endoplasmic reticulum (2) is attached to the nucleus. The Golgi complex (body, apparatus) (7) is near the edges of the cell.
