Unit 2 Assignment 1 continued …….. Discrimination

Overview of the topic – what you want to achieve

This is how it looks on the task sheet

To begin …..... Watch, think and discuss Write in your blue book https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO6PQHGXnIk Who are the characters in the clip? As you are watching this, write a thought script for the lady – we will read some out What issue is being covered in this clip? Can you write an alternative script that would erase discriminatory thoughts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKgKaQzil1A Watch the children carefully in this clip – do the girls pick up pink and the boys pick up blue? What is the issue being raised in this clip Why do you think using children so young is a good idea in an expt like this What do you think about this issue?

What is the definition of discrimination?? On a white board What is the definition of discrimination?? The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.

P2 – discrimination Direct discrimination Indirect discrimination Overt individuals openly discriminate against others. Occurs when it is obvious by words or actions of an individual that they are deliberately disadvantaging against another person. E.g. Within a care setting giving preferential treatment to some groups or denying treatment to other groups or being paid less because you are male/female This is not as obvious (Covert), it may even be unintentional. It is when certain conditions are in place that demonstrates a preference for some people over others. Rules and regulations make it impossible for a person belonging to a specific group to fully participate in society. Difficult to prove, because it is not obvious that this is what is happening. Eg. telling a joke to a work colleague about a Jewish person

What is discrimination? What should you include in your introduction ….. A definition – include overt and covert briefly 2. Expand on the type of groups / people that can be discriminated against 3. What else will you be discussing in this section on discrimination – have a look at the tick sheet.

The Basis of discrimination The cause of any discrimination is termed as the basis of discrimination. For example, a person may be discriminated against on the basis of their diversity. Brainstorm – what are the 9 bases of discrimination?

Brainstorm – what are the 9 bases of discrimination? On the discrimination example sheet – choose the correct base of discrimination for each box Culture Health status Sexuality Cognitive ability Family status Gender Disability Age Social Class

What are the 9 bases of discrimination – what to write in your coursework ... What is the cause of discrimination? Briefly describe the 9 bases of discrimination – use the text book to help you. For at least five of them make reference to the examples you have been given to demonstrate your understanding.

Checking where you are at …….

Discrimination in action …. More women than men suffer from harassment and bullying True/False Calling someone by a nickname is not a form of bullying Bullying can be in written form Giving an individual a ‘label’ can negatively affect the care they will receive Using power to discriminate against others is acceptable if done covertly It is acceptable not to let service users know about some facilities that might be available to them if there is no funding available to support the provision of the service  Stereotyping is a form of prejudice Decisions are made in the health and social care sector only after meeting the individual Telling jokes is not a form of bullying All forms of discrimination are forms of abuse Stress, due to a work overload, can contribute to abusive situations occurring A manager is allowed to favour individual staff over others  Discrimination in action …. Starter activity - true or  false – on whiteboards Are there any words you don’t understand on that sheet? Write them down on your whiteboard, add to your glossary...... Choose one of these answers that surprise you / shock you? Be prepared to tell us about it.

Task - Discriminatory practices: Research into each practice and provide a definition of what each one is. Type this into your coursework straight away. Infringement of rights Covert abuse of power Overt use of power Abuse Bullying Prejudice Labelling Stereotyping Stretch and challenge: provide an explanation of how this can be reduced within health and social care settings.

Discriminatory Practice – mix and match examples Checking your understanding Example statement 1.Prejudice A.You can't possibly be a nurse, you're in a wheelchair 2.Stereotyping B. If you don’t work the extra hours you won't get a promotion 3.Labelling C. Just urinate in the bed, I haven’t got time to take you to the toilet now. 4.Bullying D. All obese people eat too much 5.Abuse E. You cant have a pay rise, you are female and off on maternity leave 6.Covert abuse of power F. You can’t have halal food we don’t serve it in this care home 7.Overt abuse of power G. Old people can't use smart technologies 8.Infringement of rights H. A job advert clearly says no over 40’s. I cant offer you the job I’m afraid as you don’t match our criteria

Case studies you can use as examples …. Case Study sheet – 3 case studies to analyse For each case study …..... --> What bases of discrimination are evident? --> Which discriminatory practice is occurring? Extension Activity 14 on pg 68 of the text book can also be done, and these examples can be used as well.

Now add some examples that you have used, to your definitions.

Checking where you are at …….

Potential effect of discriminatory practice on service users. Research what is meant by the terms below Marginalisation Disempowered Low self esteem Loss of self identify Restricted opportunities 10 minutes

Newspaper articles ……. There are 5 articles to read You are going to read an article each and fill in the information. Then you will get into your groups and discuss them You will then be presenting your findings to the rest of your group

What will you present to the rest of the group …… A brief outline of what your article was about Which of the 9 bases of discrimination were discussed Which discriminatory behaviour was demonstrated What effect did this have on the service user or service provider  Whilst you are talking to the rest of the group they will be making notes on the sheet, so that everyone has some examples they can use in their coursework.

Now add some examples from the newspaper articles that you have used, to your definitions. Ensure you include the effect on both SU and SP

Sentence starters ……… If a person is discriminated against they may feel… People who use the service can feel… Another effect of discrimination is… One result of discrimination is… A service user may feel marginalised id they are discriminated against because … Stretch and challenge: Recommend suggestions as to how the effects of discrimination can be reduced for health and social care service users.

Timeline for legislation linking to Discrimination Between 1950 and 2006 there were laws and regulations concerning discrimination against people. Why is it useful to have an understanding of this?? We need to cover all 16 of these laws and regulations and build a timeline to show how they have developed over the years.  On the back of the flash card....... --> write who the act/regulation relates to --> what type of discrimination is it protecting that person from --> how does it ensure discrimination doesn’t occur You'll need your computers up!

P1, P2, P3, M1 Produce a presentation covering: An explanation of the concepts of equality, diversity and rights in relation to health and social care A description of discriminatory practice in health and social care A description of the potential effects of discriminatory practice on service users of health or social care services An assessment of the effects on those using the service of three different discriminatory practices in health and social care settings

M1: “Assess the effects on those using the service of three different discriminatory practices in health and social care settings”. Assess: Make an informed judgement It was identified that Mrs Holms is being faced with… discriminatory practice this is because… It is clear that … is discriminatory practice because… A service user may feel… because this is happening to them. In this type of circumstance a service user like Ann maybe affected by…

Task 1 What type of discrimination is Mr Hall suffering? Mr Hall is open about his sexuality, he was the victim of verbal abuse and lewd gestures by both staff and other service users. Mr Hall claims the abuse begun while he was in hospital in 2005. Mr Hall “became seriously worried because the harassing slurs accelerated to violent threats, such as ‘I would like to see all faggots die.’” A service user is claimed to have placed a picture onto Mr Hall’s bed depicting him engaging in homosexual sex as well as attaching a sign that accused Mr Hall of being a paedophile. What type of discrimination is Mr Hall suffering? How does it make him feel? Challenge: What could Service providers put into practice to ensure that this does not happen again?

Task 2 Mrs Holms is in hospital the doctors on the ward often addressed her as "honey," "babe," or "gorgeous," and hears sexist stories, jokes, and vulgar language. The men on the ward are addressed as “sir”. What type of discrimination is this? Describe how Mrs Holms feels being called these names. Challenge: What could Service providers put into practice to ensure that this does not happen again?
